After 300 Weeks of BDS Activism in Adelaide a Letter to 3-D Trolls

by Margaret Cassar

Dear 3-D Trolls,

We have long been familiar with wannabe friends on Facebook and You Tube who profess to be seeking peace in the Middle East but appear to see the subjugation of the Palestinians as the only way to achieve this outcome. Their aim in contacting us seems patently clear, to waste our time in fruitless discussion or find out as much as possible about our group. This is a similar modus operandi to the Christian Zionists who have plagued our education campaign in Rundle Mall during our 300 weeks of BDS actions.

And now you have appeared to continue this tactic of wasting our time. Invariably you are well dressed and personable. And straight away you establish your human rights credentials to us and loudly declare how much you care for the well being of the Palestinians. You claim to totally support us in our work and wish us well in the future. Some of you even want to buy us coffee or take us out for a drink. Very nice and sociable of you, I’m sure. Yet at the same time as we are involved in these social niceties you ask a constant barrage of questions, some personal and some that look like you are trying to weasel out information about other pro-Palestinian groups in Australia.

You really don’t need to do this. Everything about our group except the times of our weekly protests is freely available on the internet. We are a sub-committee of the Adelaide based Australian Friends of Palestine Association. We are a core group of 40 activists supported by hundreds of people sympathetic to the Palestine cause. Co-convenors of the group are Dr David Faber and myself. We have been activists for this cause since 2009. In our 300 consecutive weeks of BDS actions we have given out a total of approximately 136,000 leaflets. Most of these contain generic information about the human rights abuses suffered by the Palestinians and Products to Boycott sheets and have been distributed in Rundle Mall outside stores hosting the Israeli Dead Sea cosmetic companies, Seacret and Premier. Other event specific leaflets have been given out while protesting the Jerusalem Quartet, the Israeli Film Festivals and the Batsheva Dance Company’s appearance at the 2014 Festival of Arts.

Our group comprises representatives from almost the full spectrum of religious beliefs from agnostics and atheists to devout Christians and Muslims. Most of us are employed and work in a variety of fields. We are customer service operators, technicians, doctors, medical specialists, scientists, historians, tutors, social workers, teachers, academics etc. We are very ordinary, every day Australians. There is absolutely nothing of significance to find out about us. You are wasting your time and our time by targeting us in Rundle Mall.

Our goal is justice for the Palestinians and our 300 weeks of activism shows that we will not be side-tracked by you and other Zionists until that goal is achieved.

Yours sincerely,

Margaret Cassar

Margaret Cassar  is the co-coordinator of the AFOPA * BDS  movement in Adelaide, South Australia and a member of the Australian Friends of Palestine Association’s Executive.

The Adelaide BDS group has protested every week for over 5 years in the centre of Adelaide’s premier retail precinct and at Israeli cultural events. The members of this persistent and peaceful pro-Palestinian group have been inspired by the non-violent protest movement in Palestine at places like Bilin. They have met with considerable resistance from Zionists and Christian Zionists but remain committed to BDS actions until Israel ends its military occupation of Palestine and there is equality and justice for all Palestinians.
