After meeting with Trump, Lavrov warns against repeating mistakes made in Iraq and Libya

nsnbc : After meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pleaded to the international community to consider the consequences of ousting leaders of states and not to repeat the mistakes that were made in Iraq and Libya.

Trump_Lavrov_White House_USA_May 10, 2017Speaking at a press conference at the Russian embassy in Washington D.C., Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “We need to prevent such situations as those that evolved in Iraq and Syria … Both in respect to Iraq and Libya, the international community, the progressive community, was obsessed with the idea to oust one person — Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Muammar Gaddafi in Libya — and look what it has led to. … That is why when we are talking about the Syrian settlement; we [should] try to learn from our mistakes. Why don’t we try to focus on the settlement and not on ousting one person? Why don’t we focus on eliminating the threat of terrorism.”

Lavrov also said that Moscow believes it’s in Washington’s interest to cooperate with regard to the de-escalation zones in Syria guaranteed by Russia, Turkey and Iran. He said that it would serve common interests if the United States would cooperate and contribute to these de-escalation processes. He also said the Moscow believes the U.S. is really interested in de-escalation and cooperation, especially in the southern regions [of Syria].

Lavrov first met his U.S. American counterpart, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson before he met President Donald Trump at the White House. Lavrov described Americans in general and Tillerson and Trump in particular as “business-like people who are willing to reach agreements which are beneficial to their people.”

After the meeting President Trump gave a brief statement saying: We are going to do very well with respect to Syria. I think things are happening that are really, really positive. We are going to stop the killing and the death. Also present was former U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Dr. Henry Kissinger who, to the great surprise of many, has become a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2016.

In this context it may also me worth mentioning that the United States has agreed to provide weapons to the Syrian – Kurdish People’s protection Units – YPG. The YPG are the main military force behind the U.S. supported Syrian Democratic Forces – SDF. The YPG has its genesis as sister organization to the traditionally Russian and Syrian backed Kurdistan Worker’s Party – PKK of Turkey. Providing direct military support for the YPG is by many observers perceived as a sign for a growing Russian – US consensus with regard to settling the war in Syria.
