‘Aging population on the rise in UK’

The new figures show 16 percent of the UK population has either approached or passed retirement age which according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has “considerable implications for a range of policy issues such as pensions and provision of healthcare.”

The ONS said the number of young people aged 14 and under has halved to less than one in five over the past one hundred years.

“What we need to do now is to make sure that those of us who make up this growing part of the population are able to live as fulfilling and dignified lives as possible and can continue to participate in our local communities. That means we as a society mustn’t overlook the needs and desires of the oldest among us,” age UK’s Charity Director General, Michelle Mitchell said.

According to the ONS predictions, the number of over 65s is expected to increase by 50 percent over the next 20 years. The number of 85-year-olds is predicted to triple within three decades.

This comes as the country’s ailing economy is taking more victims each day and the number of old people at risk of poverty is set to rise.
