General Richards said Britain should show a “long-term commitment” to convince the Afghan government to provide security for British troops as they pull out from the country over the next two years.
“It is vital that Afghan confidence in the West’s long-term commitment to their country is retained. Why, should this be lost, would they stay the course themselves let alone fight to protect us in 2014 when, absent successful reconciliation, we will be at our most vulnerable?,” Richards said.
“And why should the Taliban reconcile, if they thought we were cutting and running?,” he added.
Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to say this week that at least 4,500 soldiers will be removed from Afghanistan by the end of next summer.
Britain has announced plans to withdraw around 500 of its 9,500-strong troops, mostly located in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand, by the end of this year.
