As police zeroed in on Perrone, they had circulated camera footage that showed
the suspect carrying a bag. The suspect was quickly dubbed “John Doe
Duffle Bag” and Mr Kelly said that several clothing store keepers
phoned in to say they had seen him before.
The last slaying was of Rahmatollah Vahidipour late Friday in the She She
Boutique in the working class Flatbush area of Brooklyn. The 78-year-old had
been shot three times.
His death followed that of Isaac Kadare, 59, who was killed in Bensonhurst in
August and Mohamed Gebeli, 65, who died in July in his store in Bay Ridge.
All three men were found in their stores and police said that the killer had
taken great care to conceal the bodies, covering them with clothes or other
objects to obscure them from the view of customers.
Robbery did not appear to feature as a motive in the murders. In the most
recent case, Mr Vahidipour had $171 in his pockets when his body was
discovered.
Police said nothing was taken at the scene of the second murder, in August,
and they were unable to conclusively establish whether any cash was taken
during the first attack.
The only potential thing linking the men was their occupation and their Middle
Eastern origins – two of the victims were born in Egypt while the other was
Iranian.
But the NYPD spokesman pointed out that the men had different religions – two
were Jewish, the other was Muslim, making a religious hate-crime unlikely.
Mr Kelly also said it was “reasonable to assume” that the killer had
visited the stores previously to conduct reconnaissance. It was also noted
that none of the shops had CCTV cameras.
The murders had led to fears among shopkeepers in Brooklyn. Store owners were
urged to be extra vigilant – particularly around closing time when the
killer had struck – and police advised people not to work in their shops
alone.
