DAYS after losing his clout over the government, independent MP Andrew Wilkie insisted Labor would be “foolish to burn” him or other crossbenchers.

The elevation of Peter Slipper to Speaker has robbed Mr Wilkie of the ability to bring down the government if it doesn’t introduce his poker machine limits.

“The government doesn’t know when they will need us, they don’t know where the votes will come from when they have particular pieces of legislation up,” Mr Wilkie said.

“They will need to keep the four of us on side. We’ve got the Craig Thomson affair, the opposition and the media are going to go hard against Peter Slipper, something else might bubble up.”

He said the Coalition should have wrapped Mr Slipper “in cottonwool and kept him as happy as possible”. Tony Abbott took aim at Labor critics who said he should not have lost an MP.

“The difference is that we were trying to manage Peter Slipper out of the parliament. Julia Gillard has put him into the biggest job in the parliament,” Mr Abbott said.
