Anne Ruston to replace Fisher in SA

South Australian Liberals have chosen rose grower Anne Ruston as a replacement for Senator Mary Jo Fisher, who is quitting to battle mental illness.

The state council met on Friday night to select a candidate in what has reportedly been a bitter preselection battle between factional groups.

Those seeking the spot were Ms Ruston, prominent Liberal Party member Bev Barber, former political adviser Kate Argot, farmer Gary Burgess and business development manager Marijka Ryan.

SA Liberal party president Grant Chapman says Ms Ruston won by a comfortable margin.

She will now have to be endorsed by both houses of state parliament.

Senator Fisher announced her resignation in June – to become effective on August 10 – after being charged with shoplifting.

She had faced court last year also charged with shoplifting $93 worth of groceries and assaulting a security guard but avoided conviction or penalty because she had depression.

The Liberal senator said she wanted to quit public life to battle the mental illness that she says was deliberately exacerbated by police prosecutors during her very public trial last year.

She is listed to face court again next week.

Mr Chapman paid tribute to Senator Fisher, saying she had made a significant contribution to public policy and had been a passionate advocate for rural Australians.

He said Ms Ruston, the SA party’s vice president, would be a hard working member of Tony Abbott’s South Australian Liberal team as they prepare for the next election.
