A further 1,000 public sector job losses will be outlined in the South Australian budget today.

They will be axed over three years and are expected to produce a saving of $166 million.

The cuts will be shared across government agencies and are on top of those made in previous state budgets, including more than 3,700 job losses announced in 2010.

About $60 million will be spent on targeted voluntary separation packages for the latest round of job reductions.

The SA budget will also reveal deficits approaching $1 billion per year for the next two years.

Treasurer Jack Snelling does not expect the books to be back in the black until 2015-16, a year later than had been hoped.

The Public Service Association said cutting more public sector jobs was a lazy approach to reducing costs.

Union official Jan McMahon described it as a band-aid approach.

“It always seems the public sector is in the firing line of those seeking a short-term band-aid approach to a state debt,” she said.

“Axing jobs is really about service cuts, program cuts and it will harm South Australian families.

“We’re going to be losing skills, capabilities and resources that are necessary to deliver the front line services to the community.”

Opposition treasury spokesman Iain Evans said the public sector job cuts announced in 2010 still had not been fully implemented.

He said the Government had been forced into another round of cuts because of its overspending in other areas.

“The reason the Government’s in the position where it has to further slash the public service is because it ignored the Auditor-General’s warnings about its expenditure,” he said.

“They took their eye off the ball, they mismanaged the budget and now they’re faced with the reality that they need to reduce the public service.”

The budget will have funding for a high-dependency 26-bed unit at Yatala jail in Adelaide.

A purchase of 17 public transport buses will be brought forward and park-and-ride facilities at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for tram users are to be almost doubled.
