Ashes for St. Valentine’s Day

Written last year in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Dresden Genocide in 2015. This is the first time I published it.

Ashes for St.Valentine’s Day

Ashes for Saint Valentine’s Day
The Devil has wings to target his prey
cattle to be slaughtered in a fateful date
not a celebration of love but a ritual of hate

The Ripper’s delight is the genocide’s game
to darkness ignite with a column of flame
trial by fire the wrath of the storm
among the ruins dark shadows will swarm

In the valley of the dead I wandered alone
as I witnessed with dread the fate of the unborn
Gone with the fiery wind by the ways of death
a young woman held her baby until her last breath

I searched for a friend, nowhere to be seen
no brothers or sisters, no next of keen
The sacrificial toll of a cruelty obscene
they were all victims of this killing machine

On the scope of their might the criminals raved
they turned a city of light into a cindery grave
out of spite and envy ingrained
out of sadism in a mind engraved

Set to re-write history anew
the monsters did act without further ado
‘destroy this work of art’ thought the monstrous mind
as it gladly revealed its hate for human kind

And here I am, as I wait for the rain
bereaved and confused in the house of the slain
I prayed to the All-father but I heard no reply
was he finally aware of our agonizing cry?

Now I dream of the day he will hear my call
and without delay he brings real justice for all
I dream of the day when a people in chains
will liberate their minds to be born again
