Aussie set to walk free from Bali jail

A Melbourne man who was caught with $30 worth of methamphetamine in Bali is set to walk free from jail as early as next week.

Ricky Shane Rawson had been facing up to 12 years in Bali’s notorious Kerobokan Prison after police found 0.06g of the drug when they raided the villa where he was staying in the upmarket area of Seminyak in Bali in May.

But a panel of judges in the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday sentenced Rawson to just four months, finding him guilty of drug use instead of possession, which carries a much tougher penalty.

With time already served taken into account, it’s expected he will be released from prison next week.

The chief judge, Dewa Made Wenten, told the court that Rawson’s history of depression and his clean record were key factors in him receiving a light sentence.

“The defendant suffers mental and behavioural problems that made him abuse narcotics. He needs mental rehabilitation,” he said.

Under Indonesian law, people who admit to drug addiction are often given more lenient sentences.

Prison authorities later confirmed that Rawson would be released as soon as the four month period of detention expires.

“His detention started on May 24. We have to count first when he could be released,” Kerobokan Prison head of administration Made Suardana said.

Rawson had admitted to buying the methamphetamine – commonly known in Australia as speed and in Indonesia as shabu shabu – for the equivalent of about $30 from a woman named Mary at the Sky Garden nightclub in Kuta, a popular haunt among partygoers.

However, he denied using the drugs for partying, telling the court he used speed about three to four times a month to treat depression.

Rawson is being held in Kerobokan Prison along with 11 other Australians, all of whom have been jailed for drug-related offences, including the Bali Nine, the Gold Coast’s Schapelle Corby and Sydney man Michael Sacatides.
