Australia minister in Afghan rocket risk

Reports say the radar defense system of Australian air force Hercules C130 transport plane detected incoming rocket fire but the missile hit another place on the airbase.

“The Hercules was immediately placed in full lockdown with all occupants ordered to don helmets and assume crouching positions on the floor of the plane,” News Limited newspapers reported on Thursday.

Smith on Thursday confirmed the incident but said that his plane had not been targeted. “I wouldn’t describe it as a close call,” Smith said.

“It wasn’t aimed at us, it didn’t come near us. It’s a known risk — we were briefed on that in advance of going to Kandahar and it shows the effectiveness of the early warning rocket system.”

Smith said he and his staff “took standard precautions” to delay take-off for half an hour until they got the all-clear.

Such events were “not uncommon or unusual at Kandahar,” he claimed.

Smith travelled to Afghanistan to meet Australian troops and discuss Canberra’s proposed withdrawal of troops from the country in 2014.

Nearly 1,500 Australian troops are stationed in Afghanistan as part of Australia’s Operation Slipper in the war-ravaged country, according to the website of Australian Department of Defense.
