EMBATTLED Labor MP Craig Thomson finally has some good news – the birth of a daughter, named Adelaide.

The man accused of using union funds to pay for prostitutes and other personal items had been given the week off parliament to attend the birth.

Minister for the Status of Women Kate Ellis used Twitter to publicise the news a few minutes ago. “Congratulations Craig [Thomson] and Zoe on the arrival of Adelaide. Mother and baby well,” the Minister tweeted.

Mr Thomson’s partner, Zoe Arnold, gave birth to the little girl on the NSW central coast where the MP has held the seat of Dobell since 2007. Mr Thomson is facing four separate inquiries into claims that he – and Health Services Union boss Michael Williamson – lined their own pockets with the proceeds of union funds.

The NSW and Victorian police are separately investigating a raft of claims against Mr Thomson while Fair Work Australia is expected to bring down the findings of a lengthy inquiry into the HSU later this year.

The NSW Department of Fair Trading also has questions for Mr Thomson about Coastal Voice, which he used as a campaign vehicle to help his 2007 election campaign.

Comment is being sought from Mr Thomson’s office on the happy news.
