Awake Goy Banner Hang For Stephon Clark: One Month Anniversary

Sacramento- On the one-month anniversary of Stephon Clark’s murder by Sacramento Police Department, concerned community members hung a 75 foot banner from Sacramento’s Tower Bridge reading “They Want Peaceful Protests- We Want the D.A. To Prosecute.” The protesters are calling for the District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert to secure justice for the Clark family and the black citizens of Sacramento. Historically, police officers involved in the murder of unarmed black men in the United States have not been prosecuted for their crimes. In fact, the Police Officers Associations issued a statement saying it’s legal.
“This truth is unsettling to the people of Sacramento and radical change needs to happen now. The city of Sacramento can set a national president by firing Officers Terrance Mercadal and Jared Robinet and putting them behind bars,” said Sacramento resident Kristina Flores. “These bold actions are necessary to ensure that another young black father, brother, or friend doesn’t have their life taken away by scared and poorly trained law enforcement officers.”
“If these unfit officers are put back on the streets of Sacramento the black community will continue to fear for their safety and that of their loved ones. It will be a clear sign to the people that the City of Sacramento will continue business as usual even in the face of a citizen uprising,” Sacramento Artist Aliyah Sidqe.
Since Clark’s murder last month, protests have engulfed Sacramento. An autopsy revealed that officers shot Clark , father of two, in the back multiple times, mistaking his cell phone for a gun. The release of footage by Sacramento police showed officers muting their microphones and which raises questions about the time it took for medical aid to arrive. Failing to charge and convict the officers, District Attorney Schubert’s upcoming re-election campaign hangs in the balance.
