Barlow gifted 100 workmates: Springborg

Accused Queensland Health fraudster Hohepa Morehu-Barlow showered more than 100 colleagues with lavish gifts, it has been revealed.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg says 109 Queensland Health employees have signed statutory declarations admitting to receiving gifts from the man who claimed he was a Tahitian prince.

Morehu-Barlow, 36, also known as Joel Barlow, was arrested in December and is alleged to have defrauded the government department of more than $16 million while working there between 2007 and 2011.

Mr Springborg overturned the former Labor government’s ban on revealing the information on Monday.

“We do have gifts that appear to be quite valuable, including Louis Vuitton clothing, perfumes, colognes, those sorts of things,” he told Channel 10.

While some smaller items could not be retrieved, the rest are in the hands of the Public Trustee, he said.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission will apply to recover the items as proceeds of crime.

Mr Springborg said he did not know the value of the gifts.

Barlow was committed earlier this year to stand trial in the District Court in Brisbane at a later date.
