In Honor of Our Dead: Latinx, Queer, Trans, Muslim, Black — We Will Be Free | En Honor a Nuestros Muertos: Latinx, Queer, Trans, Musulmanes, Negros – Seremos Libres

It is with pain and heartache that the Black Lives Matter Network extends love, light, protection, and abundance to our family in Orlando, Florida. We love you. Black people are a diverse community, and though the hate-filled rhetoric of the conservative right is currently trying to pit us against our kin — we will always stand with all the parts of ourselves. Today, Queer, Latinx, andMuslim family, we lift you up.

Despite the media’s framing of this as a terrorist attack, we are very clear that this terror is completely homegrown, born from the anti-Black white supremacy, patriarchy and homophobia of  the conservative right and of those who would use religious extremism as a weapon to gain power for the few and take power from the rest. Those who seek to profit from our deaths hope we will forget who our real enemy is, and blame Muslim communities instead.

But we will never forget.

Homegrown terror is the product of a long history of colonialism, including state and vigilante violence. It is the product of white supremacy and capitalism, which deforms the spirit and fuels interpersonal violence. We especially hold space for our Latinx family now, knowing that the vast majority of those murdered were Latinx, and many were specifically Puerto Rican. From the forced migration of thousands of young people from the island of Puerto Rico to Orlando, to the deadly forced migration throughout Latin America and the Caribbean — we know this is not the first time in history our families have been mowed down with malice, and we stand with you.

Religious extremism is not new to America and is not unique to Islam. For centuries, religion has been used to subjugate queer people of color and lay the groundwork for our deaths. We live in a society that gasps at mass murder but does little to produce the policies or radical ideological shift needed to keep LGBTQ people and our families alive and safe.

And so we will fight for you. We will fight for a world that celebrates your strength and the creativity of your survival.

We will fight for you. For a movement that celebrates Black and Brown Trans women, instead of neglecting their leadership and devaluing their lives.

We will fight for you. We will not allow a false narrative of “Islamic terrorism” to be dictated by white supremacists and corporate media. We know it was bullets and bigotry that killed you.

We will fight for you. We will not allow our movement to be dominated by white progressives that still attempt to define our solutions and limit our leadership. We will not allow the vision to be stunted by a gun control agenda with neither racial context nor a clear history of the relationship between white supremacy and guns in the United States. Yes, there is value in gun control and a ban on assault rifles, but it is not the complete answer. You cannot decry guns without also decrying how those guns were used to take Native land, to enslave Black bodies, to remake “Latin America”, and to redefine the western hemisphere. We need more than legislation, more than vigils and prayers, more than donations — we need a deep transformation at the cellular levels of this nation. And we’re here for it. All of it.

To honor our dead, and fight like hell for the living, we need a new vision for safety that prioritizes human rights and does not facilitate deadly violence. We need a world that realizes that the word “terrorist” is not synonymous with Muslim, any more than “criminal” is synonymous with Black. The enemy is now and has always been the four threats of white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, and militarism.  These forces and not Islam create terrorism. These forces, and not queerness, create homophobia. These forces unleash destruction primarily on those who are Trans, and queer, and brown and Black, and we are the first to experience its’ violence. These forces create the conditions for our dehumanization and our death, and we will hold them to account, no matter whose face they may wear.

Until these systems are defeated, until anti-Blackness no longer fuels anti-Muslim and anti-queer and trans bigotry, exploitation, and exclusion — we can never be truly free.

But, we believe that we will win.

Es con dolor y angustia que la red de Vidas Negras Importan extiende nuestro amor, luz, protección, y abundancia a nuestra familia en Orlando, Florida.  Los amamos.  La comunidad negra es una comunidad diversa, y aunque la retorica llena de odio de la derecha conservadora esta actualmente tratando de hacer que estemos en contra de nuestros parientes – siempre respaldaremos todas partes de quienes somos.  Hoy, familia queer, latina, y musulmán, los levantamos.

A pesar de que los medios enmarquen este evento como un ataque terrorista, estamos bien claros que este terror es algo nacido en nuestra tierra, nacida de la supremacía blanca anti-negra, el patriarcado y la homofobia de los conservadores derechistas y los que usarían el extremismo religioso como una arma para ganar poder para unos pocos y tomar poder del resto.  Los que buscan hacer ganancias de nuestras muertes esperan que nosotros olvidaremos quienes son nuestros verdaderos enemigos, y que culparemos a las comunidades musulmanes en vez de ellos.

Pero nunca olvidaremos.

El terror local es un producto de una historia larga de colonialismo, incluyendo violencia estatal y justiciero.  Es el producto de la supremacía blanca e el capitalismo, que deforma el espíritu e alimenta la violencia interpersonal.  Especialmente, guardamos espacio para nuestra familia latina ahora, sabiendo que la mayoría de los que fueron asesinados fueron latinos, específicamente Puertorriqueños. Desde la migración forzada de miles de jóvenes de la isla de Puerto Rico hacia Orlando, a la migración forzada y moribunda a través de Latino América y el Caribe – sabemos que esto no es la primera vez en historia que nuestras familias han sido atacados con malicia, y nos unimos juntos con ustedes.

El extremismo religioso no es nuevo en América y no es único al islam. Por siglos, la religión ha sido utilizada para dominar personas queer de color y preparar el terreno para nuestras muertes.  Vivimos en una sociedad que suspira cuando ocurren asesinatos en masa pero no hace mucho para producir pólizas o el cambio ideológico radical requerido para guardar la seguridad y la vidas de nuestra gente y familia LGBTQ.

Entonces luchamos por ustedes. Lucharemos por un mundo que celebra su fuerza y la creatividad de su sobrevivencia.

Lucharemos por ustedes.  Por un movimiento que celebra mujeres latinas y negras transgeneras, en vez de descuidar su liderazgo y devaluar sus vidas.

Lucharemos por ustedes.  No permitiremos una narración falsa de “terrorismo islámico” que sea dictada por supremacistas blancos y los medios corporativos.  Sabemos que fueron las balas y la intolerancia que los mataron.

Lucharemos por ustedes.  No permitiremos que nuestro movimiento sea dominado por progresistas blancos que todavía tratan de definir nuestros soluciones e limitar nuestro liderazgo.  No permitiremos que la visión sea atrofiado por una agenda de control de armas sin contexto radical o una historia clara entre la relación entre la supremacía blanca y las armas en los Estados Unidos.  Si, hay valor en tener un control de armas y una prohibición de rifles de ataque, pero eso no es la solución completa. No pueden denunciar a las armas sin también denunciar como esas armas fueron usadas para robar tierra Nativa, esclavizar cuerpos negros, para re-hacer “Latino América,” y redefinir el hemisferio occidental.   Necesitamos mas que legislación, mas que vigilias y oraciones, mas que donaciones – necesitamos una transformación profunda al nivel celular de este país.  Y estamos aquí para esto.  Todo esto.

Para honrar a nuestros muertos, y luchar con todo lo que tenemos por los que viven, necesitamos una nueva visión para la seguridad que prioriza los derechos humanos y que no facilita la violencia letal.  Necesitamos un mundo que realiza que la palabra “terrorista” no es sinónimo con musulmán, igual como la palabra “criminal” no es sinónimo con negro.  El enemigo es ahora y siempre ha sido las cuatro amenazas que son la supremacía blanca, el patriarcado, el capitalismo, y el militarismo. Estas fuerzas y no el islam crean terrorismo.  Estas fuerzas y no el ser queer, crea la homofobia. Estas fuerzas desatan la destrucción primariamente a los quienes son transgeneros, y queer, latinos y negros, y somos los primeros que experimentamos su violencia. Estas fuerzas crean las condiciones para nuestro deshumanización y nuestra muerte, y nosotros los haremos responsables, no importa cuales caras traen.

Hasta que estos sistemas sean vencidos, hasta que lo anti-negro no alimente lo anti-musulmán y lo anti-queer y la intolerancia transgenera, la explotación y la exclusión – nunca seremos verdaderamente libres.

Pero, creemos que nosotros ganaremos.
