Blair says ‘cultural dialogue’ can build bridges with the Middle East

“Despite the massive growth of access to electronic and social media in recent
years,” he continued, “direct unmediated interaction between the Arab World
and the West is at a low point. Stereotypes are hardening into caricatures.”

Gabr’s initiative will sponsor exchanges between young Middle Eastern and
Western people involved in the arts, science, sports, and the media, with
24-30 year olds eligible.

Blair, who is currently an envoy to the Middle East, is backing the project.

The inspiration for the initiative comes from the Orientalist artists of the
nineteenth century, who used their first-hand experience of travelling in
Asia to depict the region in their paintings.

Gabr, 60, who is a collector of Orientalist paintings, said the painters’s
interest in the regions they were painting allowed them to “transcend
stereotypes and engender empathy”

“The orientalists were the first globalists,” he said.

“Many of these painters immersed themselves in the culture and society of the
Arab World. Their first hand portrayals of the Middle East are a testament
to the power of close observation as a means to transcend stereotypes and
engender empathy.”
