Blue Mountains bushfire forces evacuation of homes and Katoomba High School



STUDENTS and householders have been evacuated after a bushfire ignited in the Blue Mountains this afternoon.


The NSW Rural Fire Service said the fire is out of control and started just before 2pm AEDT.

The fire broke out near the scenic railway at  Katoomba, with flames as high as 10 metres.

“A number of homes have been evacuated in the area of Cliff Drive and Birdwood Avenue at Katoomba,” the RFS said in a statement.

“Katoomba High School has been evacuated as a precaution. A relocation point has been established at the Three Sisters Motel, Katoomba Street, Katoomba.

“An Emergency Alert telephone message has been sent to affected homes in the area. If you receive this message, take action.

“Tourists are advised to avoid the area, particularly around Echo Point. Monitor conditions in your area.”

The fire broke out as temperatures in the mountains reached reached around 25C and was driven by warm, dry, westerly winds of more than 40km/h.

The spokeswoman said the fire was considered out of control.

THE RFS spokeswoman said 10 fire fighting units were at the scene, with more were heading to it and aerial water bombing had been requested.
