Bomb targets Pakistani police convoy

The incident occurred when a police vehicle escorting a prison van hit a roadside bomb on Saturday, killing one policeman and wounding 17 others, including five police officers and 12 civilians.

“It was a remote-controlled blast that targeted two police vehicles carrying prisoners,” according to a police officer at the site of the attack.

The prisoners were all safe and in police custody and were moved to a safer place after the bomb attack.

Over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
