Boy feared drowned off Wollongong beach

The search for an eight-year-old boy feared drowned off a Wollongong beach will resume this morning after police suspended the hunt last night.

The boy, believed to be Congolese, was swimming off Corrimal Beach with a girl at about 6.30pm yesterday when he became caught in a rip.

The girl raised the alarm and a combined search involving the Water Police, Surf Lifesavers, the Ambulance Rescue helicopter, and the Coast Guard was launched.

However, fading light caused the search to be halted at about 9.30pm.

John Balatos, who witnessed the incident, told the ABC he heard a young boy had drowned and no one else at the beach could swim.
“We got down here and there’s the family, there would’ve been about three of them, about knee-deep in the water just looking out, there’s two guys out there swimming, and the conditions were absolutely horrendous,” Mr Balatos said.
Police have said the search with police divers would resume at 7am this morning.
