Britain asks China to probe death of UK citizen in Bo Xilai’s Chongqing

Bo was sacked as Communist Party secretary for Chongqing after his former
long-time police chief, Wang Lijun, took refuge inside the US consulate in
nearby Chengdu for a day before being persuaded to leave by Chinese
officials who took him away for investigation.

Wang’s action triggered a torrent of speculation about tensions with Bo, who
until his dismissal was a charismatic contender to be appointed this year to
a top post in the central leadership.

Mr Wang reportedly brought evidence to Bo suggesting that Heywood was
poisoned, the Wall Street Journal reported. Mr Wang later spent a night at a
US consulate and is now subject of a government investigation.

Heywood had business links with Mr Bo’s wife, Gu Kailai, the Journal reported,
citing people familiar with the case. The newspaper said Heywood apparently
did not drink alcohol.

“Right now the drama is just getting started,” said Huang Jing, a professor
focusing on Chinese politics at Singapore National University. He said the
allegations surrounding Bo may be part of a bigger leadership split within
the Communist Party as it starts the power handover.

The Chongqing government office and Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman’s
office in Beijing were unavailable for comment about the British request.
