‘Britain failing in the war on drugs’

Speaking before the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, the Justice Secretary told MPs that policy on combating addiction and drug-related crime was not always working and that the situation was going “backwards” at times, the daily Standard reported.

His comments came as it was revealed that 84 prison officers have been prosecuted during the past five years for corruptly assisting drug using inmates.

They are certain to be seized on by campaigners who argue that tough law and order policies applied by successive governments are the wrong way to reduce abuse and support alternative approaches such as decriminalization.

Clarke told MPs that he did not support decriminalization because it would remove the deterrent effect on young people contemplating experimenting with drugs.

He said that instead the Ministry of Justice was working with the Department of Health to find better ways of tackling the drug problems that large numbers of inmates suffered from.

Clarke said a new emphasis was also being placed on prosecuting a minority of prison officers who succumbed to the “temptation” of enriching themselves by supplying drugs to inmates.

As well as the 84 officers prosecuted for corrupt conduct since 2007, prison officials also told today’s hearing that 51 staff have been dismissed and another 110 “excluded” for similar misconduct during the same period.
