‘Britons sold a pup over EU’

Fox, who had to resign as the British Defence Secretary over his links to his unofficial adviser and best man, Adam Werritty, has recommended that Britain should leave the EU unless there is a rebalancing of their relationship.

“There remains a strong resentment among large parts of the British people that they voted for one thing and were delivered into another”, said Fox.

“Worse, there is a suspicion that those who persuade them to do so were all too aware of this deception. Not only were they sold a pup but they were intentionally sold a pup”, he added.

Fox made his comments in his first major speech since being forced out of office and just hours before British Prime Minister David Cameron was due to make a statement on Europe in the House of Commons.

While maintaining that “life outside the EU holds no terror”, Fox said holding a referendum on Britain’s EU membership at the moment would “be a huge error with enormous tactical risks”.

“Instead, I would like to see Britain negotiate a new relationship with the EU based on economic rather than political considerations”, said Fox.
