UK to close borders to Greeks

Speaking to the House of Commons Liaison committee on Tuesday 3 July, Cameron said he would take whatever measure “it takes” to prevent Greek immigrants fleeing a deep recession from entering Britain.

“We obviously have contingency plans for all sorts of eventualities. The legal position is that if there are extraordinary stresses and strains, it is possible to take action to restrict migratory flows but obviously we hope that doesn’t happen”, said Cameron.

Earlier in May, British Home Secretary Theresa May also said that “work is ongoing” to prevent European Union nationals from immigrating to Britain in case the euro collapsed.

Nevertheless, people from EU countries are largely entitled to live and work anywhere within the single market.

British officials are concerned that that EU nationals might regard Britain as an economic safe haven because it is a non-eurozone country.

However, official figures show that the British economy is in a double-dip recession while the eurozone avoided a double-dip recession.
