Brits lose faith in out of control cops

Labour MP Keith Vaz is inquiring about internal corruption and unprofessional conduct among police officials after a recent flurry of revelations has dented public confidence in the police.

Before next month’s inquiry, which will drag top cops in front of the home affairs select committee, Vaz has called for “a new Magna Carta” for policing.

Vaz suggested that British Prime Minister David Cameron should get to grips with the police by hosting annual summits of top officers, which would help tidy up the mess he claims was created by Tory Home Secretary Theresa May.

The Labour MP argued that May had enflamed the current crisis in policing by wrecking morale with out-of-control cuts.

In September, an investigation into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster found shocking evidence that the statements of 164 officers had been changed to shift blame from leading police officers to the 96 football supporters who were killed in a stadium collapse.

Labour MPs and campaigners have also called for an investigation into police behaviour towards striking miners at the 1984 battle of Orgreave. Police reportedly attacked the minors with brutal force before fabricating statements that saw over 100 miners charged with rioting.
