Brough denies wrongdoing in Slipper case

Former Howard government minister Mal Brough has again denied any wrongdoing in the sexual harassment case against parliamentary Speaker Peter Slipper.

Mr Brough on Sunday won Liberal National Party preselection to run for Mr Slipper’s seat of Fisher at the next federal election.

He succeeded in his bid for a political comeback despite being linked to the sexual harassment case against Mr Slipper, who has stood aside as speaker.

Mr Brough allegedly had extensive contact with the speaker’s then-staffer James Ashby before Mr Ashby lodged a sexual harassment case against Mr Slipper.

“Let’s get beyond this,” Mr Brough told ABC Television on Monday.

“Let’s let the courts deal with it and let’s deal with the issues such as cost of living which are actually impacting on the families’ lives in the seat of Fisher.”

Mr Brough said he had always told the truth about his involvement in the Slipper case.

He defended meeting with Mr Ashby before he made his allegations against the speaker.

“When the man came to see me, I did not know why he was coming to see me,” he said.

“Why wouldn’t you meet with someone who had been a party member just because they were a staffer of Peter Slipper’s?

“Somehow that turns into a conspiracy in the eyes of the media, led by the muckrakers of the Labor party.”

Mr Brough said he wasn’t concerned about how the Slipper case might affect his chances in the next election.

“The people of Fisher I think long ago made up their minds about their attitude towards Mr Slipper.

“They didn’t need my help or anyone else’s help to do that.”

Fisher is one of Queensland’s safest conservative federal seats.

Mr Brough lost his seat of Longman in 2007.
