Bus crash leaves 24 dead in India

The accident occurred on Tuesday when a packed bus fell into the fast-flowing Alaknanda river after colliding with a truck, AFP quoted a local civil administrator as saying.

The bus was returning from the shrine of Badrinath when it rammed into the truck near the town of Byasi, 150 kilometers (95 miles) from Uttarakhand state capital Dehradun.

Twenty-four people injured in the crash were treated in nearby hospitals.

The driver of the bus survived as he jumped out of the vehicle before it went tumbling down the steep rocks.

Earlier in the day, a passenger train slammed into a stationary train at Penneconda station in the Anantapur district, 400 kilometers south of Andhra Pradesh state capital Hyderabad.

The accident left at least 16 people dead and 35 others wounded, police said.

India has the highest annual road death toll in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Official figures say some 135,000 people died on India’s roads in 2010.

The railways also have a poor safety record with more than 100 accidents reported per year.
