In June this year, Xi and Cambodian King Sihamoni met in Beijing when the king paid a state visit to China, and pledged to forge ahead with the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, which was established six years ago between the two countries.

Xi was received at the airport by members of Cambodia’s Royal Household and top-government officials. Speaking at Phnom Penh airport Xi praised the good neighborly relations between the two countries and addressed expectations about the development of bilateral relations, saying:

“The friendship has stood the test of international vicissitudes and grown even stronger since the two countries established diplomatic ties 58 years ago. … I believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, my visit will achieve the expected results, thus pushing our comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a higher level and bringing greater benefits to our two peoples”.

Xi is scheduled to meet Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, visit Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk and hold talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen. The two countries will sign several bilateral agreements aimed at consolidating joint development strategies and to boost practical cooperation.  China is currently Cambodia’s largest trading partner and source of foreign investment.

Bilateral cooperation encompasses such areas as trade, investment, connectivity, energy resources and infrastructure construction including a new port, as well as media and broadcasting cooperation. Two-way trade between China and Cambodia reached 4.43 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, an annual growth of 17.95 percent, according to China’s Commerce Ministry.
