Car Bomb in Ankara Kills 37, Injures Scores – Government Blames PKK – Questions?

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : A blast from a car bomb, Sunday night in Turkey’s capital Ankara, killed 37 and injured at least another 71. Government and security forces claim one of the suicide bombers was a female member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK. It has thus far been impossible to independently verify the claim. Even if the bombing was carried out by the PKK splinter group TAK it would raise more questions than it would provide answers.

Ankara_Turkey_car bomb_mar 2016The blast wave and shrapnel from the car bomb ripped through a crowded transport hub in Ankara Sunday evening, only a few hundred meters away from the Justice and Interior Ministries. Killing 37 and injuring at least another 71, the bombing was the second attack that targeted the city center of the capital Ankara. Monday morning Turkish security services told the press that one the two suspected perpetrators was a female PKK member.

Police claimed that evidence had been obtained that the “unnamed” female suspect joined the PKK in 2013. She was allegedly born in 1992 in the city of Kar in the predominantly ethnic Kurdish region of eastern Turkey. Government officials told the press that they expect to officially identify the perpetrator or perpetrators later on Monday.

In mid-February another attack was carried out in the center of Ankara. Government and security sources have since then alleged that the attack had been carried out by the PKK splinter group, the “Kurdistan Freedom Hawks” (TAK). Both of the attacks happened against the backdrop of the collapse of the ceasefire between the government and the PKK in June 2015 and the sustained military campaign against the PKK that was initiated late 2015.

PKK or TAK – More Questions than Answers

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, PKK embarked on its armed struggle for an independent Kurdistan or for regional autonomy in 1986. PKK attacks have historically been carried out against Turkish military forces and with clearly defined military, strategic and tactical objectives.

The PKK is a secular fundamentally Marxist organization. The strategy of suicide attacks is inconsistent with the PKK’s fundamental principles. The former USSR, Venezuela and Cuba are traditionally “supportive” of the PKK and current Russian media coverage and statements from PKK officers obtained by the author underpin that Moscow continues its “friendly” policy towards the PKK, although less overtly.

The PKK is allied with the Syrian – Kurdish PYG / YPG. Turkish military is also currently shelling PYG / YPG positions in Syria, has deployed Turkish special forces into PYG / YPG controlled areas in Syria, and Turkey continues its support of Jabhat Al-Nusrah and the self-proclaimed Islamic State; both of which are fighting against the PYG / YPG. PKK fighters have been observed among YPG / PYG forces in Syria.

The So-called Kurdistan Freedom Falcons – NATO’s  or Ankara’s Wild Card?

The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK) was blamed for the car bombing in Ankara on February 17. The TAK has previously stated that it has split from and with the PKK while several analysts and especially government-friendly analysts claim that the PKK and the TAK continue to cooperate on an organizational and tactical level. However, suicide bombings would also be inconsistent with the TAK’s strategy. The strategy is inconsistent with the TAK’s declared political philosophy and even more inconsistent with the small number of TAK members. The TAK would soon be extinct is it opted for suicide attacks.

There is reason to believe that Turkish and / or NATO intelligence has at least partially infiltrated the TAK. The second “suicide attack”, allegedly carried out by this secular, PKK associated organization raises a number of serious questions and justifies calls for full transparency and an in-depth investigation. Considering the current AKP government’s crackdown on an independent or dissenting Turkish media it is, however, unlikely that such a demand would gain mass traction. Turkey is no novice when it comes to false flag attacks and 4th generation warfare.

To add a grain of geopolitical irony. The SIPRI yearbooks issued following Germany’s reunification show that Turkey received a large quantity of East German and Soviet (GDR / USSR) armored personnel carriers and light weapons from Germany. The precondition for the “gift” was that the material should exclusively be used against PKK fighters.

It is noteworthy the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for U.S. citizens in or traveling to Turkey two days before the blast. It is also noteworthy that the attack on the evening prior to the day that the Geneva III Talks on Syria are scheduled to resume, on Monday, March 14. Neither the PKK nor the TAK have made independently verifiable claims of responsibility.

Turkish President R. Tayyip Erdogan notes that the suicide attacks showed the terrorists’ desperation and that the crackdown against the PKK was successful. Military operations against the PKK in eastern Turkey have claimed scores of civilian casualties.
