Child sex taskforce arrests two Melb men

Two Melbourne men have been arrested – this time by Victorian police – over child exploitation on the internet, with one of them alleged to have tried to procure a 13-year-old girl for sex, authorities say.

The arrests come after the Australian Federal Police (AFP) this week charged 15 men with child porn offences.

In the Victorian case, police arrested a 29-year-old Malvern man on Friday who allegedly used the internet in a bid to procure a 13-year-old girl for sex.

They searched his home and seized his computer before charging him with grooming and procuring offences.

Another man, aged in his 40s in Keilor East, was arrested on Thursday and is expected to be charged on summons with various child pornography offences.

The arrests were made by Victoria Police’s new Taskforce Astraea, a 10-man team, unveiled on Tuesday, to target pedophiles and child pornography.

In the federal case, the 15 men from Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Queensland, among them fathers, were arrested following the discovery of hundreds of thousands of images and videos of children including toddlers, disrupting a network of online child predators, the AFP alleges.
