Chilean Workers React to Decades of Globalism

According to Euronews, the riots now taking place in Chile are related to a demand for “free education.” Education, however, is only one of a number of demands made by workers as they participate in a 48-hour national strike. Chilean unions demand that tax reform be imposed on transnational corporations, international consortia, and the wealthy elite to address social problems caused by decades of globalism. They also want to change the country’s social security system that has left millions of elderly people and pensioners impoverished. For details, see Six reasons for Chile’s nationwide strike.

Following the CIA orchestrated coup in Chile that overthrew a democratically elected president and installed the military dictator General Augusto Pinochet, “free market” economic prescriptions formulated by the Milton Friedman-style neoliberal “Chicago Boys” were imposed on the country. “The US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has disclosed that CIA collaborators helped plan the economic measures that Chile’s junta enacted immediately after seizing power,” the Chilean economist Orlando Letelier wrote in 1976, shortly before he was assassinated by Pinochet’s secret police, the DINA (a paid CIA asset).

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

As journalist Greg Palast noted in 2006, Pinochet was credited with the “Miracle of Chile” that was “just another fairy tale.” In fact, the CIA’s neoliberal agenda resulted in widespread unemployment and an increase in poverty. Pinochet and the CIA “abolished the minimum wage, outlawed trade union bargaining rights, privatized the pension system, abolished all taxes on wealth and on business profits, slashed public employment, privatized 212 state industries and 66 banks and ran a fiscal surplus,” Palast writes.

The so-called “Miracle of Chile” was in fact a neoliberal experiment that would be applied elsewhere in South America. “In 1998, the international finance Gang of Four – the World Bank, the IMF, the Inter-American Development Bank and the International Bank for Settlements – offered a $41.5 billion line of credit to Brazil. But before the agencies handed the drowning nation a life preserver, they demanded Brazil commit to swallow the economic medicine that nearly killed Chile. You know the list: fire-sale privatizations, flexible labor markets (i.e. union demolition) and deficit reduction through savage cuts in government services and social security,” Palast writes.

The marches and scattered riots taking place in Santiago and elsewhere in Chile are a response to the neoliberal agenda imposed on the country regardless of the will of the people.

The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves,” said Henry Kissinger following the CIA coup. I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people.”

  1. Wow! The hand of the globalist is reaching far and wide.It seems that few places are left untouched.Makes you wonder how they are so persuasive? Where did all of that ‘stimulus money go anyway? Perhaps most of it was used to by up most of this and many other countries precious commodities which were then possibly used to stimulate the greed of the governments of these countries on the condition that they support the globalist agenda? All the while sticking us,our children and grandchildren with the bill? America;funding it’s own destruction just as an addict uses his/her hard earned money to fund their poisonous slow killing executioner.

  2. If you are always looking for fault R. you’ll find it! The enemy’s of Jesus found fault in Christ
due to their own laws enough to kill the Prince of Peace their Messiah, Jesus the Savior of the World’s peoples for all generations if they invite Him in in an action of prayer… who is the Creator’s Son God Himself! They found fault that probably caused their end in hell at least! You don’t want to go there R. It’s not a good place worse than you think! So, why not avoid it by not rejecting Jesus who, if He is real, which He is, you can contact Him yourself and make peace with Him!
My God why give up the chance even if you think it’s all a fake and a sham in your mind? Try Jesus R. It won’t hurt or be a bad experience but good for you! ok?
    – If not you lose a lot, but Jesus is long suffering not willing that any should perish! Think it over…Why would I take time and patience with you if it weren’t true?

  3. The REAL Truth About Comet Elenin OR NOT? 8/24/2011.avi

We often hear the claim that our nation is a democracy. That wasn’t the vision of the founders. They saw democracy as another form of tyranny. If we’ve become a democracy, I guarantee you that the founders would be deeply disappointed by our betrayal of their vision. The founders intended, and laid out the ground rules, for our nation to be a republic.
The word “democracy” appears nowhere in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution — two most fundamental documents of our nation. Instead of a democracy, the Constitution’s Article IV, Section 4, guarantees “to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government.” Moreover, let’s ask ourselves: Does our pledge of allegiance to the flag say to “the democracy for which it stands,” or does it say to “the republic for which it stands”? Or do we sing “The Battle Hymn of the Democracy” or “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”

    • I can understand and appreciate your point; further on, according to Wikipedia, United States’s 7th President paved the way for the modern Democratic Party. It would be Interesting to note his direct contribution to dismantling the “monopoly” of the United States Government (The works of United States Government prior to 1829 was largely influenced by United States Congress; answer a question: “Who is Congress?”). So along with Democratic Party, by 1830 the race joins the National Republican Party, influenced by the Whigs, Adams Men, Henry Clay. And why not? After all, for one, the United States of America, which at that time was comprised of the union of the few States like Missouri ‘ Maine ‘ Alabama ‘ Illinois ‘ Mississippi ‘ Indiana ‘ Louisiana ‘ Ohio ‘ Tennessee ‘ Kentucky ‘ Vermont ‘ Rhode Island ‘ North Carolina ‘ New York ‘ Virginia ‘ New Hampshire ‘ South Carolina ‘ Maryland ‘ Massachusetts ‘ Connecticut ‘ Georgia ‘ New Jersey ‘ Pennsylvania and Delaware, was not only forming in its new identity, but logical deduction leads us to take as a given that it had a strong and organized military, because as we all know, just decades ago it won its freedom from dependence in 1776. I don’t know what it was, maybe the founding fathers were getting much older by 1829, but secondly, internally United States of America was up for grabs. A prospering nation, with access to unlimited resources looked pretty lucrative to some “Informed” men. And so the struggle began. Democrats for expansion and privatization, while Republicans calling to use national resources to build a strong economy while promoting national unity and harmony. This is too easy.

  5. I know this is a little off the topic, but I was wonder if someone can educate me in the use of gold as a currency as I am a little naive and skeptical about the buying of gold or using gold as a currency.

For example, in the 1800′s and well before that the population was around 2-3 billion people and at that time, there was quite enough gold to go around for everybody or to put in circulation. Now since gold is even rarelly found today or since then, and the fact that we have 6 billion people in the world with 3 more billion to be projected in the next couple of decades, I just want to know how gold is going to be better than our fiat currency. If there is not enough gold for everyone in circulation, and being the fact that most people like to hord their money, wouldn’t like 40% of the population be rich and maybe 60% of the population would basically have nothing. I mean if you go into the store to buy food every week, once gold is used, it is gone. You can’t print more gold like the fiat currency. I mean seeing as how we have corporations holding all their money and leaving a large majority of the population of the world in poverty and no jobs, how would that differ with the gold currency. How would a gold currency or paying by gold be any more beneficial to us that fiat currency. Yea there is no interest or anything like that, but when it is gone, it is gone. Also, if people lose gold coins in a hole somewhere, that’s one less coin in circulation. The coins we have now are made in copper and zinc which is plenty to go around. But gold is rare. So I just feel that the majority of the population of the world would be poor if not poorer than they are today with the fiat currency. Can someone explain how the gold circulation and gold currency think would work? As I said, before, I am a little skeptical about it. Thanks.

    • People also used silver and copper, not gold exclusively. With that in mind there is plenty of money to go around.

  6. The Globalist Question: It’s always, how many of the jet-setting jack-booting financial parasites can the economic overthrow of a country support and how much will the corruption cost. People that otherwise, live a worthless existence, find their fortune in stealing the cultural inheritance of nations — as if it is their god-given-right to practice high level criminal thievery and stomp on the rights of citizens to own their own resources. The bastards of the NWO see it as a crime to grant citizens any social credit for the natural resources they exploit. They only get greedier and greedier as they force the purchasing power of workers down — for at the same time they have to force prices down in the lunatic approach to world market domination and theft. Theft and corruption are very un-productive, and war is counter-productive, but the lunatics must follow the path of the psychopath cause it is all they know. Persons of low ethical integrity make for poor management and accelerated waste of world resources. But the NWO needs it’s corruptible swine-pigs running the show for their wrong-head plan to survive. The dinosaur must die.

The NWO has engendered the worst, most inefficient and ineffective world leadership the world has known for a long time. Their crimes do not pay. They a butt-head stupid in the lust for control and crooked-power and end up shooting themselves in the foot. They believe in the methods of low-life scum-baggers.

  7. CUT is communist, the student protest is led by a communist, the teachers union is run by a communist and they are all supporting the communist agenda here and that is the true motive and the timing of these riots. I live just blocks from the presidential palace in the capital Santiago and I have been tear gassed multiple times, had cars set on fire outside my apartment, had rocks thrown through my child’s bedroom windows and have seen the police nearly killed by the crazy students from outside my apartment window.

Some of your article is true, the part about the CIA, the Chicago boys, Pinochet etc. but to make this into some social reform issue is not completely accurate. I have lived in Chile for 5 years now and I understand very well what is happening and it is political in support of the communist agenda. If the students really wanted better and free education, they would not “occupy” their schools and destroy everything inside and set them on fire and not attend classes for 3 months.

    • Jessica….let me tell you something: that the spokeperson of the student movement is communist DOES NOT MAKE THE MOVEMENT COMMUNIST. That would be an insult to the thousands of students that are independant and working on it.

In fact, I work on these protest where I live (a city in southern Chile) and i’m not a commie nor I intend to be one. In fact, if you do a little research and pay attention to true independant media (such as “Bío-Bío” radio or “El Mostradior” newspaper or student’s twitter and facebook pages) you will see that some of the riots and fights on the streets are indeed started by cops. There are pictures and videos about it. The evidence is all there and it can’t be ignored.

But then again, there are SOME students that indeed start riots too…but in the latest protests those have been identified and stopped by other students in the rallies. I know that and I’ve seen that…and I’ve worked hard on convincing those students to stop throwing stones (although they don’t listen ’cause they’re really frustrated by the pace this things are going).

      • well, I was not talking about if police were protesting or instigating, but since you brought it up, what if a police not on duty wanted to protest? Does he not have the right? I would not be surprised if there were possibly police placed in a crowd in any city to provoke, that’s just how shady governments are. From my perspective (right in the middle of all the drama, unlike yourself) I can see the riots weekly and I have seen only students causing trouble, 14 year old, 16 year olds etc. Pure flaites! I think their parents should go to jail for being bad parents and letting their children start cars on fire, throw rocks and police who do not make laws but are doing their job and trying to restore order. But we both know that the judicial system here will just give them a little slap on the wrist and they will be back on the streets with little consequences. I support protesting, I am anti big government, and definitely anti-globalists, but I cannot support violence and my original point that these protests are backed financially and with legal counsel by COMMUNISTS is true, and the sad thing is that they are just using the students as their little puppets and most of them do not have the brain to know better.

        • I have the same opinion as you with these “flaite” kids. And you know what brings them? the lack of education, but more importantly, the lack of values.

And that started to happen when the “libertine market” entered this country. You see, I don’t know where you came from, but 20 years ago, kids dreamed of BEING a firefighter, a police officer, a doctor, an engineer, a pro futball player… That changed the last 20 years, as slowly but continuously the advertisements and the media changed priorities in parents. Today, most kids dream of HAVING the latest console, the latest TV, the latest trainers…. “screw hardwork and education, drug dealing and stealing can give me that fast so I can be like people on TV”.

Poorly educated parent’s don’t have “ad filters” either so it’s a circle that repeats and repeats untill a generation breaks it and actually improve the educational system so future parents and future kids DO have an “advertising filter” and rescue the value of being instead of having.

        • Communism vs Fascism vs Capitalism vs whatever other “ism’s” . The tyrants are cruel and useless whether they know their top in ranks are in bed together as secret hybridized versions of each ism

    • Libya was offering free education too certified citizens — No Jewish arts students as agents for Mossad. Therefore … a system of social-credit rather than communism. But why would the student attack their own assets unless they have been infiltrated by the NWO parasites. Most likely the Rothschild banking establishment extort and black-mail monies from Chile, just as they do Japan.
The British Imperial Empire is collapsing under the weight of the corruption it has fostered. Countries that can, would be well advised to sever their connection with the parasite, and deport the British-Zionist agents of greed, terrorism and evil.

  8. What part of Tyrants surrender now do the tyrants not understand? The whole world, all of consensus reality, the majority of folks everywhere are ordering every tyrant to surrender as any serial violent offender is supposed to ! The tyrants refusing to surrender and be permanently removed from accessing victims is whats making the world a worse place ! Surrender now tyrants!

    • I think I figured it out: the “non-tyrant-voices”, in the street do not have water cannons on there “armored tyrant dispersers”…there budget deficit, went to the tyrants, for water cannons and “armored peasant dispersers”.

  9. August 25, 2011 — WASHINGTON (AP) — New York’s police commissioner confirmed Thursday that a CIA officer is working out of police headquarters there…

    • They get their foot in the door in the door in enough key police departments, which they probably already have, and develop relationships enabling them to get their recommendations into key departmental job openings, and eventually they’ll have an easy time taking over the country with an emerging technological control grid to aid them.

  10. This is not new news. Everything the snake “CIA” bites turns into poison. This organization of Communist In America is nothing but a NAZI Patriot Act ventriloquist pulling the strings to the puppets of regime change. They are the Al Qaeda, created the Al Qaeda and are the Demon-ocracy spreading around the globe by Anti-American and Anti- British people. These two super powers are the real Terrorist on this planet and the real governments ruling today. You kill these snakes by cutting off their heads.

    • The CIA brought down Allende and put Pinochet in charge for 17 years, effectively opening the gates for USA megacorporations and free-trade agreements with the USA, China and other countries with big transnational corporations.

Allende may have been a lousy president…but it was democratically ellected. It’s not the place of the CIA or anyone to go against the people’s will. If people want crap, heck, it will have crap, but let the people decide, not some guys in the white house or in langley.

    • Not much difference between Al Qaeda and the CIA. HMSS was based on Arab black-magic … became MI5 MI6 and CIA is probably modeled after MI5. It’s all the same Illuminati assassins school of spooks. The evil started in Iraq and has done the full circle back. So, put some hashish in your pipe and smoke it. The mentality of the Royal elite comes out of a very dark black box. They tend to confuse the star-maps relating the origins of human species. The key for survival is to dis-empower the planet-wreckers and impostors to the green. A big lie is no replacement for sound science that is within our reach. Deception is counter-productive.

  13. Notice how there is no mention of the Chilean strikes on lame stream news. They wouldn’t want American people to get the same idea, now would they ?

The burning, rioting and looting that appears to be happening in Chile is wrong, but the economic strike is the right idea.

Humans globally need to go on an economic strike. It is all of us at the bottom of the pyramid, churning away on the hamster wheel (slaving) that holds the elites up at the top of the pyramid. Stop and the top will come crashing down.

  15. The Business Cycle; Booms and Busts- go ahead and blame the free market as if there is such a thing.

    Bloomberg

Chile’s central bank may cut rates if a global slowdown reduces commodity prices and damps growth in the world´s biggest copper producer, where domestic demand is showing signs of slowing, bank President Jose De Gregorio said.

“If the world decelerates enough to provoke a deceleration that exacerbates gaps, expands excess capacity,” the central bank could change the “trajectory” of its monetary policy, De Gregorio said at the Bloomberg Chile Economic Summit in Santiago today.”

“Chile, whose economy grew 10 percent in the first quarter from last year and 6.8 percent in second quarter, is seeing signs of a deceleration in demand growth that could become more pronounced in the rest of the year, De Gregorio said. It is less probable that policy makers will raise rates beyond today´s 5.25 percent, he said.

Policy makers, in the minutes of their June meeting, estimated inflation would close the year at 4 percent. Since then, inflation has slowed, reaching 2.9 percent in July from 3.4 percent the previous month. ”

Wherever there is a Central Bank, expect booms, busts and unrest.

  16. What the Hell!

    1) CUT (the MEGA Union calling for strikes) is a Communist Organization.
    2) Nationwide there were no riots. People worked. With some exceptions.
    3) Alex Jones You said (If you don’t stand for something you fall for anything, In wich side are you? CUT isn’t for freedom don’t support them!)

I can belive that globalists are managing the country. But CUT are no freedom fighters. Just a bunch of criminal thugs.

I’m sure we need a gold standar (wich we don’t have). But belive me we’re better off since Allende regime.

    Please Alex Check your sources.

    • BTW the riots were centrally planned. By CUT (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores) (Workers Unitary Central)

      • Riots were NOT centrally planned. I can confirm that as the CUT union repeatedly called for a pacific strike. The government orders the riots and I HAVE PROOFS and I’m a student myself and have been into those rallys.

Why the government would order riots? quite simple, really.

The government order riots (through the interior affair and security ministery) so they can call the police and act freelly against any people they see in a rally, being pacific or not (i dare to say that 80% of the rallys nationwide are pacific).

Heck, cops infiltrate the rallys just to make riots. That’s how sick and crazy this government is. You want proofs? there are pictures all over the internet showing the face of a cop caught in the act on camera by a student in Valparaiso city. The government even recognized it had cops infiltrated on rallys!!!

        How about that!!!!

Guys…. I think I speak for many chileans when I say that we’re so fucking tired of this so called “free market” economy and “dual party” political system that these civil unrests in different cities in the country won’t stop. It’s just unfair to see that there are only 4 supermarket chains nationwide (effectively stopping anyone to open a supermarket), only 3 pharmacy chains nationwide (effectively killing any competition AND confabulating between the three of them to raise prices…there’s even a criminal case open because of that), only 3 telecomm companies nationwide (all 3 of them privately owned)…. tap water companies are privately owned, electric power companies are privately owned…even fucking ROADS are run by privates (but i think they’re somehow managed by the state), public transportation is privately owned….public television is funded by privates through ads, there is no public radio…

        • How can you have a free market economy when you have a central bank that plans the economy? Central Banks are run by central planners, planned economy, much like us. In my view it isn’t a problem so much of private companies, but that the private companies that are allowed in are “chosen” and all outsiders of the “chosen” get left out and usually fold which is what hurts your economy.

        • @jSlyCat: that’s why I said “Free Market” (between the ” signs) because it’s not really free. It’s more like “libertine market” as it screws everyone but the elite.

Now, the concept of central bank in Chile is not like the one you have in the USA. Here, the central bank is an autonomic institution that is ruled by law and has very specific functions. It has it’s own law and it depends directly of the president and the senate, so it answers to them.

The weird thing is that the money the country uses, is not debt. In fact, I think Chile has little interior debt and little to no foreign debt (actually… USA OWES money to us).

        • Of course ours is bigger, but notice the similarities;

          fed
          wikipedia
“In the 1930s the Federal Reserve Act was amended to create the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), consisting of the seven members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and five representatives from the Federal reserve banks (Section 12B). The FOMC is required to meet at least four times a year (the practice is usually eight times) and is empowered to direct all open-market operations of the Federal reserve banks.

During the 1970s, the Federal Reserve Act was amended to require the Board and the FOMC “to promote effectively the goals of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates” (Section 2A). Also in that decade, the Act was amended so that the member governor proposed by the President to be Chairman would have a four year term as Chairman and be subject to confirmation by the Senate (member governors per se each have 14 year terms, with a specific term ending every two years) (Section 10). The Chairman was also required to appear before Congress at semi-annual hearings to report on the conduct of monetary policy, on economic development, and on the prospects for the future (Section 2B).”

          “Strategic objectives of the Central Bank of Chile from their website;

To keep annual CPI inflation at around 3% most of the time, within a range of plus or minus one percentage point.

To promote the efficient and safe operation of financial markets and to provide the currency and other payment means necessary to achieve it.

To prevent risk situations that could affect the normal functioning of internal and external payments and, in the event that such situations arise, to address them in a timely fashion.

To safeguard the Bank’s capital by carrying out an efficient financial and operational management, together with a diligent administration of the Fiscal Agent’s resources.

To contribute to the general understanding of the Bank’s policy decisions and of economic and financial affairs, through the generation and dissemination of reports, studies, and relevant macroeconomic statistics.

To diligently and efficiently fulfill the other functions that society has entrusted to the Bank, such as those associated with the Free Competition Tribunal, the Commission on Distortions, and the Monetary Fund.

Based on these definitions, the different units of the Bank proposed their own strategic objectives, as well as concrete initiatives to be developed in the 2009–2012 period, as a function of the established priorities and budget restrictions set by the Board.

This planning, which underscores the essence of the Bank’s role, and the changes to the internal structure that were applied in September 2005 together will allow the Bank to continue to successfully meet all the challenges that have arisen over the years and to be better prepared to face the challenges to

          European Central Bank

The European Central Bank (ECB, based in Frankfurt, Germany) manages the euro – the EU’s single currency – and safeguards price stability in the EU.

The ECB is also responsible for framing and implementing the EU’s economic and monetary policy.
          Purpose

The European Central Bank (ECB) is one of the EU institutions. Its main purpose is to:

keep prices stable (keep inflation under control), especially in countries that use the euro.
keep the financial system stable – by making sure financial markets and institutions are properly supervised.

The Bank works with the central banks in all 27 EU countries. Together they form the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).

It also leads the close cooperation between central banks in the euro area – the 17 EU countries that have adopted the euro, also known as the eurozone. The cooperation between this smaller, tighter group of banks is referred to as the ‘Eurosystem’.
          Tasks

          The ECB’s role includes:

setting key interest rates for the eurozone and controlling the money supply
managing the eurozone’s foreign-currency reserves and buying or selling currencies when necessary to keep exchange rates in balance
helping to ensure financial markets and institutions are adequately supervised by national authorities, and that payment systems function smoothly
authorising central banks in eurozone countries to issue euro banknotes
monitoring price trends and assessing the risk they pose to price stability.

They all do the same things together. Go look for yourself.

    • the Gold Standard is a Bullshit Fraud.
All you need is forbid private creation of currency, aka no more fractional reserve banking.
only the government owned bank may create currency to spend it into the economy, but the amount has to be controlled transparently. that’s the whole secret.

check out the money masters documentary by Bill Still, he is right on. better than Ron Paul.

      • So who stop goverment from printing all the money they want? They alway talk about transparency, but you can’t belive them.

  18. As I understand it way before the industrial revolution and during the building of the Union Gold and Silver was the money. Money is really a product of value to use in trade. I give you this PIECE OF METAL and you give me what I produced. I then take this money and save it or spend it. When I spend it I get something in return. If the stock markets and banks trade in SO CALLED money but produce nothing…. then maybe this is the REAL PROBLEM. If stock values keep rising and then falling how can moneys real value ever be set? If BANKS PRINT MONEY out of thin air then how is there any real value in counterfeit or FEIT money? So how can the govt not want to set the value of money so it can thus control inflation and swings in value of it and trade policies as in tarriffs and taxes? Seems to me to work from the basics is the most stable way to keep the value stable and the markets. I guess I need to go back to school…lol

  19. What the devil is this article? INFOWARS bashing Libertarian economics?

“Pinochet and the CIA abolished the minimum wage, outlawed trade union bargaining rights, privatized the pension system, abolished all taxes on wealth and on business profits, slashed public employment, privatized 212 state industries and 66 banks”

This is exactly the agenda of Alex’s mentor, the Freemason-libertarian Ron Paul. It goes to show just how devious and duplicitous Alex Jones is, promoting the old bastard with one hand while trashing his agenda with the other hand.

    • Your response to this article is almost comical. Ron Paul stands for the Philosophy of Liberty.

Now tell me how in the world could Ron Paul stand for enslavement, corpacracy, fascism/socialism while still adhering to the Philosophy of Liberty?

Under the Philosophy of Liberty; You own your life, your liberty, and your property. No person or group of persons can take your life, liberty, or property as this is murder, slavery, and theft. Likewise, no global entity can do this whether it be a bank, corporation, or foreign goverment. Not to say this doesn’t happen as evil men have been empowered by the well intentioned masses throughout the ages through lies. It’s up to the well intentioned masses to take the power back from those that are evil once the lie has been exposed.

And that’s bring us to today. Those evil men are trying real hard to keep those lies from being discovered through more lies, propaganda, and deception. But many are beginning to see through the lies. And those many are helping others to see through them as well.

    • That’s why the socialists and christian democrats who took control never got rid of most of the policies especially the central bank.

      • Socialists in Chile are a joke…and a very bad one. They say they protect the people’s interest, yet Ricardo Lagos’ government (socialist) was the one that gave most privileges and tax cuts to corporations and elites. They were never better since Pinochet dictatorship.

Christian Democracy on the other hand..are wimps and defend the current system because they profit from it….and a lot.

The people of chile was once fooled by these kind of people (the socialist party, the christian democracy party, the radical-social-democrat party, and the “party for democracy”) grouped under the “Concertación” coalition, into thinking they were going to change Pinochet’s constitution and system…yet they didn’t fulfill the expectations people got in them.

Piñera (and the “Alianza por Chile” coalition) won the election in 2009 with the promise of a better wealth distribution, better education system and less crimes…yet they failed delivering that.

        • Thanks for a more detailed post.

They all seem to claim to be center-left or center-right which most likely means they are all the same. Good luck to the folks of Chile.

      • Oh yeah, and before I forget Ron Paul does not belong to the Chicago school of thought on economics but the Austrian school.

Here is one more tidbit of info for you from The Economist’s View:

        Milton Friedman’s Social Welfare Program

Not everyone realizes that Milton Friedman is the “architect of the most successful social welfare program of all time”:

The Other Milton Friedman: A Conservative With a Social Welfare Program by Robert Frank, Economic Scene, NY Times: Milton Friedman … was the patron saint of small-government conservatism. Conservatives who invoke his name in defense of Social Security privatization and other cutbacks in the social safety net might thus be surprised to learn that he was also the architect of the most successful social welfare program of all time.

Market forces can accomplish wonderful things, he realized, but they cannot ensure a distribution of income that enables all citizens to meet basic economic needs. His proposal, which he called the negative income tax, was to replace the multiplicity of existing welfare programs with a single cash transfer — say, $6,000 — to every citizen. A family of four with no market income would thus receive an annual payment from the I.R.S. of $24,000. For each dollar the family then earned, this payment would be reduced by some fraction — perhaps 50 percent. A family of four earning $12,000 a year, for example, would receive a net supplement of $18,000 (the initial $24,000 less the $6,000 tax on its earnings). [giving a total income of 30,000]”

Mises Daily: Thursday, April 21, 2005 by Laurence M. Vance

“Surprisingly, it was a free market economist who helped the federal government implement the withholding tax in the first place. As was pointed out by the Austrian economist, Murray Rothbard (1926–1995), in his 1971 article “Milton Friedman unraveled”:

One of Friedman’s most disastrous deeds was the important role he proudly played, during World War II in the Treasury Department, in foisting upon the suffering American public the system of the withholding tax. Before World War II, when income tax rates were far lower than now, there was no withholding system; everyone paid his annual bill in one lump sum, on March 15. It is obvious that under this system, the Internal Revenue Service could never hope to extract the entire annual sum, at current confiscatory rates, from the mass of the working population. The whole ghastly system would have happily broken down long before this. Only the Friedmanite withholding tax has permitted the government to use every employer as an unpaid tax collector, extracting the tax quietly and silently from each paycheck. In many ways, we have Milton Friedman to thank for the present monster Leviathan State in America.”

I wonder how you feel if you had to send in the check yourself instead of it being withheld.

  20. As I understand it way before the industrial revolution and during the building of the Union Gold and Silver was the money. Money is really a product of value to use in trade. I give you this and you give me what I produced. I then take this money and save it or spend it. When I spend it I get something in return. If the stock markets and banks trade in SO CALLED money but produce nothing…. then maybe this is the REAL PROBLEM. If stock values keep rising and then falling how can moneys real value ever be set? If BANKS PRINT MONEY

  21. I don’t blame the people for being out in the streets rioting. A small group of people at the top want all the power and screw the people. What the President is getting is what we call “feedback.”

    • People is getting sick and tired of being ROBBED by the elite and puppet government since Pinochet era.

For example, any mega corporation here in Chile pays roughly 17% of it’s revenues in taxes and most of them have “multiple roles” (kind of a taxation ID) so they pay less taxes. Small and medium business pay nearly 20% of revenue taxes….AND PEOPLE PAY 20% TAXES FROM THEIR INCOME!!!!! How’s that fair???

International corporations should pay 35% in revenue taxes but they make a legal move that creates a “chilean subsidiary” that only pays 17% in taxes, thus legally avoiding taxation.

You think that sucks? Think again: the minimum legal salary is roughly US$390 per month and the most basic rent costs US$200 a month (and i’m talking about a 25 square-meters house). Nearly 12% of the people here has that income as a maximum and the average chilean earn roughly US$810 per month… not even nearly enough to have a decent living standard. We have people here that is so fucking billionaire that can even rival the US elite and people so poor that lives in camps.

Add to that mix that we have the worst educational system in latin america and that schools are segregated (rich people go to rich schools and poor people go to poor schools) and we have the perfect mix for people getting sick and tired of the system.

We have freedoms, yes, but our freedom of choice, when it comes to politis, it’s reduced to only two big conclomerates: the “concertacion” (which are like the democrats on the USA) and the “alianza por chile” (which are like the republicans). Our constitution was made during Pinochet dictatorship and in order to maintain the Pinochet system long after he left power, he made sure that whatever government followed his, it would have to be done his way and no other way.

CUT people are thugs, that’s true, but then again, all our politicians are. Heck, our president IS the biggest thug this country has ever had (he was even prosecuted by justice 27 years ago for banking fraud).

And let’s not talk about mining industries here, because they pay the lowest taxes IN THE WORLD and they leave us practically nothing compared to all the profit they make with OUR natural resources.

If you need more info, you can contact me or ask in this thread. I’ll most certainly answer your questions.

  22. God damn them! They don’t care about their own Chilean people! They, the powers that be consider them less than slaves while they live well and wish the people would die so they could have it all! I believe it just like in so many countries like Amerika and the central idea of depopulation comes through Kissinger a very dangerous Jew with a head on his shoulders but he’s antichrist!!

    • It’s not wise to use God’s Name in vain.

      • Based on what evidence?

      • Tit.1

[15] Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

    • If you are always looking for fault R. you’ll find it!
Think it over…Why would I take time and patience with you if it weren’t true?!
