China cancels visit to Britain over Dalai Lama spat

“We call on the British side to earnestly respond to China’s solemn
demand, stop conniving at and supporting separatist attempts to achieve
Tibetan independence, take practical measures to eliminate the terrible
impact and take actions to preserve Chinese-British relations.”

Mr Cameron and Nick Clegg met the Dalai Lama earlier this month as he
travelled to the UK to collect the £1.1 million Templeton prize, which he
donated to Save The Children.

In the past, China has reacted strongly to some countries for hosting the
Dalai Lama.

In 2008 it called off a major European summit because Nicholas Sarkozy, then
French president, was due to meet the Dalai Lama.
