Chopper lifts visitors from roof of flooded ute

Dramatic footage shows the rescue of four people trapped on the roof of their ute by rapidly flowing water in a Queensland national park.

The people — a Bundaberg couple, their 15-year-old daughter and her 15-year-old friend — were returning from a camping trip in the Kinkuna National Park around 10.10am today when they ran into trouble about 20km south of Bundaberg, the Courier Mail reports.

The group became trapped in the flooded Croonar Creek and had to be winched to safety by the AGL Rescue Helicopter.

The crew had initially been told their services were not required as bystanders were attempting the rescue.

But the helicopter crew insisted they hover above the scene to intervene if necessary.

The ute was about 150m from dry land and some bystanders had managed to make it to the vehicle with the help of ropes.

But chopper pilot Peter Marris said it would have been much more difficult and risky for them to make it to dry land safely.

The two girls had been attached to safety ropes and begun wading their way away from the ute when Mr Marris decided it was too dangerous to allow them to continue.

“Watching it unfold we could see just how much swift water was around them that they probably couldn’t see and if someone lost their footing or became separated from the rope the situation could have become not so good.”

The girls were airlifted separately from the adults and all were reunited 5km from the scene a short time later.

Mr Marris said that it was a good outcome.

“Apart from some stress and trauma they were fine, just wet and cold maybe.”
