The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) says industry does not have a preference for how a proposed lease of the Gladstone Port might be structured.

The State Government is considering leasing Gladstone and other ports, which was recommended in the Costello audit of state finances.

QRC chief executive Michael Roche says industry may explore the option of operating the port themselves.

“What might be of interest actually to industry is putting money on the table themselves to purchase the asset,” he said.

“Remember, the coal companies went very close to making a successful offer to buy the coal rail network a few years ago.

“They’re all the options that I’m sure industry will consider over the next 12 months as Government comes to a view about what it wants to do with Gladstone Port.”
