Colorado wildfire rages on

On Wednesday, the blaze, fanned by hot winds, consumed a number of homes on the wooded edges of Colorado city and was squeezing on at the edges of the US Air Force Academy where it forced evacuations, Reuters reported.

The fire burned about 10 acres of land along the southwest boundary of the academy’s 45-square-kilometer (28-square-mile) boundary.

Officials have not given a clear estimate of the number of homes destroyed but they fear the figure will probably be high.

Soaring temperatures have hampered firefighters’ efforts to contain the blaze, stretching for nearly 3,500.

The weather is expected to stay dry and hot across much of the US this week, with little chance of rain forecast to dampen the blazes.

“This is the worst fire season in the history of Colorado,” Governor John Hickenlooper told reporters.

According to the White House, US President Barack Obama would tour the fire-affected area on Friday.
