GLADSTONE Regional Council will ask the State Government for $500,000 to initiate an independent study of the health of Gladstone Harbour.

Councillor Clyde Cameron told yesterday’s council meeting the public had no confidence in what’s happening at the moment, referring to the reports on the health of Gladstone Harbour from government departments.

He put forward a motion to ask for funding for an independent study, which was quickly seconded by Cr Col Chapman.

“We need to go to the Government, get some money and get someone to have a look at the harbour,” Cr Cameron said.

He said he hoped to be proved wrong in his belief that the harbour was almost dead.

“My heart’s with the harbour,” Cr Cameron. “I know what happened to it over the last few years.

“This harbour has been sacrificed for development.

“A time will come when it’s all over in the harbour and movements of privately owned boats will be restricted.”

Cr Cameron initially only suggested $50,000 but after discussions at the meeting, this was increased to an initial request of $500,000.
