Crowdfunded Campaign Rallies Nationwide to Get Colbert

Fix Young America, a digitally-crowdfunded campaign to encourage youth entrepreneurship, has graduated from the Internet to nationwide action.

Its organizers are planning a nationwide rally on 300 college campuses with two goals: to spread the campaign’s message and to recruit comedian Stephen Colbert to the cause.

The campaign, backed by the Youth Entrepreneur Council (YEC), promotes entrepreneurship – including tech entrepreneurship – as a way to solve youth unemployment, currently at a 60-year high in the U.S. #FixYoungAmerica is releasing a book this May chock full of relevant ideas, including: a public high school that teaches students to write code, national legislation to allow crowdfunding of small businesses and sparking a startup renaissance.

As YEC director Scott Gerber sees it, a rally across college campuses is a smart way to spread the message that any young person with a good idea can build the next Facebook, Twitter or Spotify.

It’s also smart, says Gerber, for the campaign to be seeking out the famed “Colbert bump,” as thousands of college-aged kids consider themselves part of the Colbert Nation. The rally’s organizers will be encouraging students across the country to tweet messages to Colbert, urging him to get on board.

“The #FixYoungAmerica movement aims to shed light on the solutions that can help solve youth unemployment, get our young people back to work, and get these solutions into the hands of every leader and decision maker in America so we can hold them accountable,” explains YEC founder Scott Gerber.

“With this rally, we hope that we will be able to recruit the great American hero, Stephen Colbert, to our cause. With his help, we believe we can get our leaders to both take notice and act, and give our nation’s students and recent graduates a much-needed ‘Colbert Bump.'”

Gerber’s been planning to reach out to Colbert for months. Last week, Colbert announced he’s extending his SuperPAC to college campuses across the nation to help give a voice to the country’s youth. Gerber thinks the comedian’s timing couldn’t be more perfect for the #FixYoungAmerica campaign to enlist his help.

“The #FixYoungAmerica campaign is excited to see that Mr. Colbert is listening to college students, and encouraging them to make their voices heard on the issues that matter most to them this election year,” says Gerber. “#FixYoungAmerica hopes to play a role in dramatically amplifying the voice of our nation’s Millenials in collaboration with one of our generation’s greatest heroes.”

The YEC joined up with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and its one million members to plan the April rallies. MTV is also on board – its mtvU network will spread word of the event on 750 additional campuses, potentially reaching another 9 million students. Anyone that takes action as part of #FixYoungAmerica will have their photo posted on MTV.com, and the site will also feature some of the best videos from the campaign’s members.

#FixYoungAmerica originally had a $30,000 goal on crowdfunding website IndieGoGo in order to fund its book. The campaign hit that mark well before deadline with the help of donors big and small — a success which allowed the campaign’s directors to focus their attention on offline events such as the April 19 rally. However, the campaign is still collecting donations to help expand the program’s reach through other yet-to-be-announced events.
