Cuban actors who disappeared en route to film festival want to defect

“We are ready to do any work that is available,” he added.

Miss de la Rua de la Torre told Reuters News agency: “In part, it’s hard
to leave your family and friends behind, but at the same time you do it so
you can help them. There’s no future in Cuba.”

Immigration lawyer Wilfredo Allen said the pair would apply for political
asylum in the United States within 10 days, and that they had a “very
high chance” of getting their request approved.

The film “Una Noche” (One Night) tells the story of three teenagers
trying to make the dangerous ocean passage from Cuba to Florida in a
homemade raft, a plot that drew comparisons with the decision the two actors
later made.

The film’s third main actor travelled to the festival despite his co-stars’
disappearance and won the award for Best Actor, which he shared with Mr
Florian.

After winning the prize Dariel Arrechada said: “I wish they were here,
but … you could be happy for them, for Javier and for Anailin and for
everyone. It’s weird. I miss him.”
