HOBART, July 6 AAP – Former AFL star David Wirrpanda has received one of the top gongs at the National NAIDOC Awards.

Mr Wirrpanda, who played for the West Coast Eagles from 1996-2009, has been named 2012 person of the year at a ceremony in Hobart.

Organisers said the award recognised Mr Wirrpanda’s work with indigenous young people and the establishment of the David Wirrpanda Foundation.

He will receive a $20,000 bursary to help him continue his work.

NAIDOC’s lifetime achievement award went to Bunna Lawrie, a founding member of seminal indigenous band Coloured Stone and a Mirning elder from South Australia.

“Bunna Lawrie is an inspirational role model who reaches people through the gift of music and has been a major contributor to Australian music,” organisers said.

The NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) awards highlight the outstanding contributions made by indigenous Australians to their communities, indigenous issues or their chosen field.

More than 750 guests attended the ceremony, including federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin, Michael Dodson and Lowitja O’Donoghue.

They were entertained by Troy Cassar-Daley, Emma Donovan and rising Tasmanian star Dewayne Everettsmith.
