It wasn’t long ago a PNAS study led by Stefan Rahmstorf had come out claiming sea level rise is “accelerating”. This of course was followed by the mainstream media jumping on the global warming bandwagon and trumpeting doom and gloom would strike sooner than we ever thought, maybe even before we die.

Der Spiegel: Global Warming Now Causes Sea Level DropThrough Weather Shifts! Aralship

Unfortunately, the acceleration has been in the opposite direction, thus making the authors of the PNAS study look just a bit foolish.

The latest NASA satellite data show that sea levels have dropped 6 mm over the last year – the biggest drop ever recorded since satellite data has been taken. This is hardly the kind of acceleration Rahmstorf had in mind. You’d think the media would be falling all over themselves to report this good news. They have not. Only a tiny few German media outlets have reported the plummeting sea level news.

It’s due to a ”weather shift”!

Der Spiegel rolled out a report called: Weather Shift Drops Global Sea Level, authored by Axel Bojanowski, hat-tip Dirk Maxeiner here. Caution: don’t be fooled into thinking Der Spiegel writers have become sceptical. To the contrary, they are cleverly, indirectly, blaming global warming for the “peculiar” sea level drop.

Global warming, you see, leads to strange weather shifts, which is now the cause of the unexpected sea level drop, i.e. warming leads to weather shifts, which leads to sea level drop. Of course Der Spiegel will never admit this is what they are claiming, but they do indeed want you to believe it’s all because of “unusual freak weather” (which started when humans started driving SUVs).

The eastern Pacific heated by up to 10°C, huge quantities of water evaporated – and then later the mass of water fell to the ground via numerous storms over South America and later over Australia during the La Niña period.”

To Der Spiegel’s credit, Bojanowski at least admits that sea level rise has slowed down (emphasis added):

However since 1993, the oceans have been measured by satellites. They have detected a rise of 3 mm per year. During the last eight years, the rate of increase has slowed down.”

Leading German tabloid Bild here also expressed shock that sea levels have dropped by more than half a centimetre over the last year. Here, Bild blames the ENSO (er, weather) for the sea level drop.

Over the last 12 months, more precipitation than usual poured down over the continents, for example the destructive flood in Australia. The blame for this: the especially pronounced weather phenomena El Niño and La Niña.”

German sceptics mock “accelerating” sea level claim

Germany’s online auto-reporter.net expresses doubts about the coming climate catastrophe, citing that back in the 1980s Germans were projecting the end of the forests due to acid rain. 25 years later the forests are as healthy as they have ever been.  Auto.reporter.net questions the supposed sea level rise:

It is supposed to be rising rapidly and submerging many countries. Now scientists have determined that sea level is sinking. […] The causes have yet to be determined. Scientists had expected a continuous increase.

What can we learn from that? That scientists can never exactly know what is happening. And this is the case concerning alleged man-made climate change. It is foolhardy when people think they can impact the climate over 100 years. The political target of limiting the temperature increase to 2°C  is haphazardly selected. […]  We’ll probably laugh about the climate change discussion in 20 or 30 years just as we laugh today over forest die-off, which in reality never came to pass.”

Finally German science publicist Dirk Maxeiner here simply could not contain his urge to mock the alarmists:

Global sea level has dropped by more than half a centimetre over the last 12 months. That equals 5 metres of sea level drop over the next 1000 years – at least that’s what my computer simulation shows. Now how on earth are the island states supposed to cope with all this expanding land? What a catastrophe! We have to immediately form a special commission charged with the task of managing the great transformation of these regions and setting down ecological guidelines. Professor Schellnhuber – it’s up to you!”

  1. this just gose to prove that when science sells itself out like prositues for the purposes of killing off humanity and taxing them to death that none of words that come out of there mouths line up with anything …..just fruitless good for nothing people that are just confromation that when you buy into mans ways for life you just get fruitless disgusting life robing cancer in the name of science ……ive never known anything to be more constantly wrong and ever changing and absolutly worthless to give wieght to

  2. I also used to believe that AGW was a real environmental issue and indeed it influenced my choice of degree. However the science simply does not add up, I now view myself as an evolved human being, who looks upon ‘warmists’ as monkeys….
the peer review process for the warmist ‘science/toilet’ papers reminds me of a similar process myself and my friends engaged in at school when we used to mark each others’ French tests….. we even used to pass our pen with the paper to allow the ‘corrections’ to look legit…..
now I think the only people who still believe in this crap are our resident AGW gay tag team stalk on and palm job….. all bow down and worship man bear pig!!! sich heil sich heil….
    jokers…
people who are REALLY concerned with REAL environmental issues are spoilt for choice why would you continue to bang this drum…. unless you have a vested interest that is……

  3. WOW … soon the AGW Scum will be telling us…Um…Ok …No

    There is nothing left.

EVERYTHING is Caused by a 0.1% change in the composition of the atmosphere.

They will find a way of blaming AGW for Anything, it will only take time.

    Asteroid impact …. Blame AGW

    Solar Flare….. Blame AGW.

Supernova occurs in a neighboring galaxy …. Blame AGW

Al Gore stubs his toe …. Blame AGW.

and if you provide them with any science they are too busy with their fingers in their ears shouting LALALALLL LAAAL LAL LAA LAA I DON’T HEAR YOU I DON’T HEAR YOU LA ALA LAA
    does my fucking nappa in…

  4. Stripped of it’s global warming denier spin, it’s an interesting story, IMO.

    First the spin:
Deniers love the short term fluctuations. In any noisy record which is increasing, there will be short downward periods. The paid global warming denier network then jumps on these short downward periods, and uses them to confuse their audience.

Although the original article tries to cast doubt on the effects of El Nino, it is a huge phenomenon. Surface water temperatures do increase and this does lead to increased evaporation rates.

Global dimming caused by Asian burning of fossil fuels and high sulfur coal is a real effect. This global dimming effect seems to be masking the effect of higher CO2 levels, on both temperature and sea level. This masking effect is a problem, because CO2 increases persist longer than particulate emissions:

    Wikipedia – Global Dimming:

Global dimming is the gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth’s surface that was observed for several decades after the start of systematic measurements in the 1950s. The effect varies by location, but worldwide it has been estimated to be of the order of a 4% reduction over the three decades from 1960–1990. However, after discounting an anomaly caused by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, a very slight reversal in the overall trend has been observed.[1]

Global dimming is thought to have been caused by an increase in particulates such as sulfate aerosols in the atmosphere due to human action.

It has interfered with the hydrological cycle by reducing evaporation and may have reduced rainfall in some areas. Global dimming also creates a cooling effect that may have partially masked the effect of greenhouse gases on global warming.

Deliberate manipulation of this dimming effect is now being considered as a geoengineering technique to reduce the impact of global warming.

One interesting development is the gravity data from the European GOCE sattelite. Apparently they have produced a gravity map of the earth, showing slight variations in gravity and shape of the earth from place to place:

    esa.int/esaLP/SEM1AK6UPLG_LPgoce_0.html

When viewing this map, people should keep in mind that the shape and gravity variations are greatly exaggerated deliberately by the map makers to make the variations more visually obvious. The real variations and deviations from the theoretical shape of the earth are pretty small.

Another interesting development is that the NASA GRACE satellites are now able to trace mass movements from one place on the Earth’s surface to another. The scientists quoted in the article claim to be able to measure the evaporation in the El Nino area, and then trace the mass shift as the water eventually ends up in South America and Australia. This is interesting, if true.

The new satellites are new tools, and it is interesting that we are now able to trace stuff like this, when traditionally we have been unable to trace these sorts of mass shifts.

The Arctic sea ice is definitely melting, though. Because this is floating ice, this has minimal effect on sea levels. But the increased solar energy absorbed by the area due to the ice/albedo feedback is warming the entire Arctic. As more ice from the interior of Greenland melts, sea levels should start increasing more rapidly.

I wonder why the DENIER leland is such a constant DENIER of his or her extremist status as a DENIER of well established natural history.
The deserts are littered with marine fossils! I guess ancient SUVs caused ancient global catasrophic climate change for those poor critters.
The great god AGWa must be on vacation.

So, Leland, I guess the science is not settled after all, and the factors affecting climate change are slightly more complex and varied than contemplated by the AGWer’s This means, of course, the models have to be revised and we can call off the crisis. Poor maligned CO2, who would have thought that a simple life giving molecule would be so vilified

But then, this would not be the first time wrong predictions were made.

“Arctic specialist Bernt Balchen says a general warming trend over the North Pole is melting the polar ice cap and may produce an ice-free Arctic Ocean by the year 2000.” Christian Science Monitor, June 8, 1972.

When floating ice melts the water around it does not rise. Check your drinking glass DENIER.
Ice is solid water that is expanded slightly due to its crystalline structure. So, the water displaced by the floating ice should be slightly more than the melted water. Of course a little of floating ice is above the water so it does nothing to water levels.

  5. I think global warming burned my toast this morrning

  6. Global warming is responsible for everything and be damned if logic says how ridiculous it is to blame something for contradicting outcomes.

global warming is basically the al-qeada of nature where it is the boogeyman defying all logic pointing to how absurd it is and how much a myth it is.

Congrats to the scientists out there who didn’t sell themselves out to further this bullshit and to the others and science in general, this just shows how one can’t assume scientists don’t have an agenda because THEY ARE HUMANS and humans have a bias and agenda. I like science if it is done in the correct way but I don’t automatically trust everything science tells me if it comes from scientists and is about a hot topic.

I like the guy above who said global warming burnt his toast. That was a beauty

  7. Maybe someone will start a pro-carbon cult. Then, they can have a holy war with the anti-carbon cult. The rest of us can watch this as a reality show with popcorn.
