Official sources in Cambodia state that the 53-year-old Evard Nicolas Sarot who was arrested on Tuesday has been identified as a former member of the Catholic clergy in the Netherlands. Sarot allegedly paid about 20 boys under the age of 15 a few dollar each to pose nude for him, said police. Siem Reap Provincial Court charged him under the anti-human trafficking law on Tuesday. He was arrested outside a Siem Reap hotel said Mr. Ream Chanmony, a spokesman for the provincial court. Chanmony added that Sarot is being held provisionally detained in Siem Reap provincial prison.

Chhay Haklong, Deputy Chief of the provincial police’s anti-human trafficking unit stated that police found a laptop inside Sarot’s hotel room on Wednesday. In it, there were additional images of naked Cambodian boys different from those police found on his Nikon camera on Tuesday. He added that police would try to identify the other children if the court ordered a further investigation. Sarot maintained the images were solely for personal use, said Haklong.

A conviction for producing child pornography in Cambodia carries a sentence of five to ten years in prison. The sentence can be doubled for the distribution of the materials.

The website of the Old Catholic Church in Culemborg, Netherlands, lists Sarot as having been a priest there from 2004 to 2013. nsnbc international will be reaching out to the parish to acquire further information and to make relevant inquiries.

The questions nsnbc would likes to see answered are questions such as: Can the parish verify that the Sarot in Cambodia and the Sarot listed as pastor on its website are identical; Is the parish aware of the situation; Can the parish make statements about Sarot and his demeanor between 2004 and 2013; Were there complaints linked to child abuse; Why did the new 53-year-old leave the parish; Does the parish have a proactive policy to prevent child sexual abuse, if so, what are the policies, if not, why not?
