Details surrounding the federally funded street lights that double as omnipresent surveillance devices aren’t getting any less creepy. A Deputy Homeland Security Director told FOX Charlotte, “you would never know” if Big Sis was watching, a quote that wouldn’t look out of place in George Orwell’s 1984.

And we’re not just saying that for dramatic effect – the idea that you could never be certain whether or not Big Brother was watching and the feeling of constantly under suspicion is a dominant theme in the 1949 dystopian novel that depicted a totalitarian state under which the population is kept under constant government surveillance.

“If the city installed street lights with surveillance abilities… you would never know,” Charlotte’s Deputy Homeland Security chief was quoted as saying.

Just like the inhabitants of Oceania had telescreens that watched their every movement, recorded their conversations and displayed propaganda messages, Americans are set to be treated the same using ‘smart’ street lights now being installed in major cities across the country.

And just like Winston Smith was encouraged by the telescreens to inform on thought criminals, these street lights will feature messages from Janet Napolitano encouraging to Americans to report on each other for “suspicious activity”.

But unlike Orwell’s 1984, Intellistreets won’t have to rely on children denouncing their parents for making subversive statements, the system’s ability to record private conversations will make that process so much more efficient.

The FOX Charlotte report also also divulges a new way in which the street lights will be used to keep tabs on Americans who dare leave their houses. The system is linked directly in with local police. If the sensors in the street lights pick up any movement at certain hours of the day, authorities are alerted, making the enforcement of curfews much easier.

Since the makers of the devices have exploited the wave of publicity first kicked off by our story to stress how the street lights can be used for “homeland security” purposes to ‘keep people safe’ while also saving energy, the federal government immediately declared them to be ‘doubleplusgood’ and they are now being installed in major cities like Detroit, Chicago and Pittsburgh with the aid of funding from the Department of Energy.

That’s what they make shotguns with full-choke for. A little #4 or #6 shot will delete their surveillance capabilities with a quickness.
And so does this fall under Civilian Law or Military Law in Civilian Courts?
For residence of a state, Habeas Corpus is at hand.

And with that in mind, are we to view ourselves as non-combatants under marshal law in Civilian Courts (where operable), or are you thinking we will tolerate being Civilans in Civilian Courts being accused by a Federal government entity acting with military precedence, who are funded by tax dollars? Taxation without Representation.

Voting all judges out who subscribe to this at the state level.

Habeas Corpus is not at hand. It was dissolved when Bush signed the Patriot Act I into law in 2002. We haven’t seen hide nor hair of Habeas Corpus since then.

Things in this country are certainly becoming worse than anyone ever imagined or was Orwell’s 1984. I don’t think Orwell realized how far we would get with technology. Between these surveillance devices constantly watching and listening to us and the new drone helicopters with tazers, shotguns and missiles this will be something out of Half Life Episode 1 game. If you want to see it virtually then play that game and pretty much where we are heading if not there already. I feel so comforted that I “would never know” as if this makes me feel better. Actually makes things worse. I have one thing to say about something I saw Napalitano.. I saw your shady *ss on TV and you look like a suspicious cross dresser who may be up to something and needs to be investigated!

There must be several statutes under the Constitution that FORBIDS this sort of activity by government therefore where are the lawyers with balls to launch multiple class action suits with the immediate desisting of all such activities and implementations of such devices??!! A good thought.
Someone has to maintain all of the recording equipment, the cameras, and power all of this stuff, and it’s going to cost a fortune to install. What is it all for? To spy on people without any probable cause? Isn’t that the definition of waste? DON’T WE HAVE ENOUGH TO PAY FOR?

The movement and voice detection and police alerts built into these street lights should have everyone wondering what in the world happened to our country. This is NOT the same place I grew up in, that’s for sure.

First time I read 1984 I thought it could happen. The second reading I was pretty sure it had begun. Now when I read it I know that Orwell was being optimistic.
