The Johnson & Johnson Corporation (JJ) has agreed to pay $55 million after a jury in Missouri awarded the plaintiff damages because the company’s talcum powder products caused her to contract ovarian cancer.

The plaintiff used JJ’s products such as Baby Powder and Shower to Shower Powder on her genitals for decades. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she endured a hysterectomy and other related surgeries which caused trauma and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Citing how unfair this verdict was, Carol Goodrich, spokesperson for JJ said that this ruling “contradicted 30 years of research supporting the safety of cosmetic talc” and her company fully intended to “appeal the jury’s decision and would continue defending its products’ safety.”

Goodrich continued: “For over 100 years, Johnson & Johnson has provided consumers with a safe choice for cosmetic powder products and we will continue to work hard to exceed consumer expectations and evolving product preferences.”

While JJ faces nearly 1,200 independent lawsuits for not sufficiently cautioning consumers about the real cancer risks their talcum based products pose.

In New Jersey, another jury awarded $72 million the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer after using JJ’s talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes.

Since the 1970s studies have been conducted on the link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder, resulting in a plethora of scientific papers that not only prove, but also disprove there is a correlation.

According to the American Cancer Society, talc powder is “a mineral made up mainly of the elements magnesium, silicon, and oxygen” but in its “natural form” talc contains asbestos “a substance known to cause cancers in and around the lungs when inhaled.”

Recent studies have confirmed that talcum powder can increase the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer, the most common ovarian cancer.
