Driver will face court over swap trick

A man waved over for a random breath test on the NSW Pacific Highway drove straight on before trying to swap places with his passenger while the car was still moving, police say.

Officers patrolling the Port Stephens suburb of Heatherbrae say they attempted to stop the Daewoo for a breath test about 2pm on Monday but the 29-year-old driver accelerated away.

He then allegedly swapped positions with his female passenger before the car came to a stop further up the road.

Police will allege the man was unlicensed and driving an unregistered car, and that his breathtest showed an alcohol reading of 0.0894.

He has been charged with driving unlicensed and uninsured, and the 27-year-old woman has been issued with infringement notices over the unregistered vehicle.

The man has also been charged with driving in a dangerous manner, which NSW police told AAP related to his behaviour after he drove past the officers trying to pull him over.

He has been refused bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday.

A police crackdown on dangerous driving this holiday long weekend – Operation Stay Alert – was scheduled to finish at midnight on Monday.

Double demerits have been in place since Friday and 1000 extra officers have patrolled the state’s roads.
