Revellers have begun gathering along some of Sydney Harbour’s best vantage points ready for tonight’s New Year’s celebrations with road closures set to begin and a blackout zone declared along Anzac Bridge.

Barricades were erected early today on the walkway and cycleway of the Anzac Bridge, with signs warning that no stopping would be allowed on the bridge during tonight’s celebrations.

A pedestrian who saw the barricades this morning warned that the cycleway is littered with debris including staples, which could be dangerous for cyclists.

A spokeswoman for Roads and Maritime Services said the barricades, erected for the first time this year, are in place for safety reasons due to tonight’s Sydney Resolution Concert on Glebe Island under the bridge.

The spokeswoman said the debris would be removed.

More than 1.5 million people are expected to gather along every possible foreshore vantage point to see the fireworks display which will include seven tonnes of fireworks lighting up the Harbour Bridge.

Despite this morning’s clouds, the Bureau of Meteorology is expecting clear skies for tonight’s display with temperatures reaching 25C.
