Ebola sparks emergency in W. Africa

Authorities in West African nations have called for states of emergency as the fast-spreading Ebola epidemic takes many lives in their countries.

The Ebola outbreak has mainly affected Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, causing West African nations to call states of emergency on Thursday.

In Sierra Leone, the parliament was to meet to ratify a state of emergency declared last week.

The country has the most confirmed infected cases, as 800 troops, including 50 military nurses, were deployed to guard hospitals and clinics treating patients stricken by the disease.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also declared a state of emergency for a minimum of 90 days on Wednesday amid an outbreak of the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, also witnessed an outbreak of the deadly tropical disease which has already taken two lives and infected five others in the capital city of Lagos.

Moreover, many people from other parts of the world including the United States and Saudi Arabia have also contracted the Ebola virus after visiting the West African nations.

Since its outbreak earlier this year, the epidemic has claimed nearly 1,000 lives and infected more than 1,700 others across the region.

There is currently no known cure for Ebola, a form of hemorrhagic fever whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, bleeding, and fever.

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood, feces or sweat. It can be also spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.

Ebola was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 in an outbreak that killed 280 people.
