Edward Snowden: the quiet Hawaii life of the NSA whistleblower

Another neighbour said: “He seemed a very private person but we used to
acknowledge each other. He would wave and I would wave back. There are a lot
of military renting in this area, and the people in that house before were
military, so we thought they were just military.

“We assumed they were transferring in and taking their time to settle in.

“Then the next day they were gone.”

Another neighbour Carolyn Tijing, told KITV: “We occasionally saw him as
he was coming or going, or checking mail, or getting the garbage. We would
say ‘Hi how’s it going? How are you?’ and he would just rush inside.”

She said the boxes in the garage “literally went from top to bottom all
the way across. It was odd, we thought it was really odd. Many times my
husband and I commented ‘Why do you think they haven’t gotten rid of their
boxes?’ You know most people, they move in and they get rid of their boxes.”

Manuel Ulep, 19, said: “I saw him once in a while. He used to do his own
thing in the garage and he had a lot of boxes in there.

“He just seemed like a typical person. He did used to wear a baseball cap
a lot though so you couldn’t see his face.”

Estate agent Kerri Jo Heim, who is handling the property, said the couple had
left at the request of the owner because he wanted to sell it.

She said police had visited her last Wednesday to find out where Mr Snowden
went after May 1 but she did not know.

At that point police were not aware of the leaks and the visit stemmed from
his having been absent from work.

The rest of Mr Snowden’s family is believed to be based on the American
mainland.

Mr Snowden’s mother, Wendy, is listed as working as chief deputy clerk at the
federal court in Baltimore.

By apparent coincidence that is the same court where members of the media
petitioned for open access to the military trial of Bradley Manning, the US
soldier accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of secret documents to
WikiLeaks.

Among the journalists and activists who joined the case was Glenn Greenwald,
the Guardian columnist to whom Mr Snowden chose to leak the National
Security Agency (NSA) documents.

A woman believed to be Mrs Snowden emerged from her house in suburban Maryland
on Monday morning and ignored questions from reporters.

A neighbour said she believed Mr Snowden had once lived at his mother’s house
but had not seen him in around eight years.

“All of them are very respectable people,” the neighbour said. “Wendy is just
a very nice lady.”
