Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood to stage Tahrir Square sit-in

It said there would now be a protest under the banner “In Tahrir Square,
until parliament returns”.

Khairat al-Shater, the Brotherhood’s deputy leader and principal strategist,
in a separate interview released on the Brotherhood’s website, said a key
goal was also to support the “president-elect until he gets in office
and with full power to represent and serve all Egyptians”.

The Brotherhood has seen its hopes of gaining almost total power over the
Egyptian system dashed in the last three months. At one point it dominated
parliament, was directing the formation of an Islamist-led constitutional
committee, and was the front-runner in the presidential election.

It was this surge that, analysts say, triggered the army backlash. But in
order to defeat the army, it now has to win round the non-Brotherhood
opposition, which was almost as alarmed by their political ambitions as the
army.

On Thursday night, a new crowd was starting to form, hundreds strong, in
Tahrir Square. The army has yet to make any further response to the crisis.

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state joined a growing chorus of alarm,
including Human Rights Watch, which said the military’s actions meant its
authority went “far beyond their powers under Hosni Mubarak”.
