In November 2012 the Egyptian government under president Mohamed Morsi withdrew its ambassador to protest an Israeli war against Israel’s war against the Palestinian Gaza Strip. Israel’s operation, dubbed “Pillar of Defense” was launched in October 2012.

An illegal Israeli air strike killed the then Chief of the Al-Qassam Brigades, Ahmed Jabari.

The Al-Qassam Brigades are the military wing of the Palestinian, Muslim Brotherhood affiliated Hamas. Four Israeli civilians were killed by retaliatory fire with crude, unguided rockets.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights reported that 158 Palestinians were killed during the conflict.

The majority of the killed Palestinians, 102 out of 158, were non-combatant civilians. 55 militants and one police officer were killed by Israeli fire. There were 30 children and 13 women among the Palestinian fatalities.

In 1979 Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace agreement with Israel. Relations between the two countries have, however, remained cool. Israel reopened its Embassy in the Egyptian capital Cairo in September 2015, four years after it was stormed and ransacked by Egyptian protesters.
