Egyptian Court Upholds 3-Yr Sentence for ‘Contempt of Religion’

TCP : A Cairo misdemeanor court on Thursday upheld a three-year sentence handed to Egyptian writer Fatma Naaout for “contempt of religion,” Youm7 reported.

Fatma Naout_Egypt_YOUM7 (Archive)On Jan. 26, Naaout was convicted for comments she made in relation to the Islamic ritual of mass sacrifice of sheep or cows, usually occuring during Eid al Adha, to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son.

On her face book account, Naaout described the ritual as the “greatest massacre committed by mankind. Happy massacre, everybody.”

During her trial, Naanout denied she intended to insult Islam. According to the Egyptian Penal Code, contempt of religion charge is punishable with prison sentences of between six months and five years.
