Wali also ordered the allocation of 2,000 EGP for each one of those five injured.

Death toll in the accident rose from 14 to 15 after a dead body of an elderly woman was found afloat later in the afternoon, Kafr al Sheikh Governor Al Sayed Nasr was quoted by Youm7.

In addition to the 15 dead, five family members on board were rescued and were transferred to a nearby hospital, said Nasr.

An unknown number of passengers were onboard the ferry when it sank while crossing from Kafr el-Sheikh’s Sendion to Beheira’s Derot in the New Year’s Eve. However, rescue teams are currently searching for more possible victims.

The accident marks one of many Nile River transport accidents that occur in Egypt each year due to lax regulations and law enforcement.

In July, a ferryboat sank in the Nile in Giza’s district of Al Warraq leaving 15 passengers dead, while six injured passengers were rescued, the Interior Ministry said.
